[ccp4bb] 2022 MicroED workshop

2022-09-14 Thread Brent Nannenga
Dear all,

We are pleased to announce the 7th MicroED workshop to be held the evening of

December 11th to the 14th, 2022, and will be open to both academia and industry.

This workshop will be held at the MicroED Imaging Center at UCLA and will
contain

both lectures and hands on demonstrations and training. For more information,

tentative schedule, and to apply please see the following website:

https://cryoem.ucla.edu/course-2022

Space is limited and historically, the workshop is typically oversubscribed,

therefore we encourage applications to be sent in early.

Topics covered will include all aspects of microcrystal electron

diffraction (MicroED) of diverse samples such as soluble proteins,

membrane proteins, small molecules, natural products, and other materials.

We will cover

* Sample preparation methodologies for proteins and small molecules
* MicroED data collection
* Camera performance
* Cryo-FIB-milling procedures for MicroED
* Data analysis software, structure solution, and refinement

The schedule is available on the registration page.

// Sincerely; on behalf of the organizing committee (Tamir Gonen, Brent
Nannenga)

[ccp4bb] Reminder: postdoc position in CryoEM, 21 september deadline

2022-09-14 Thread Per A Bullough
Applications are invited for a 4-year fixed term post-doctoral research
position based in the laboratories of Prof Per Bullough (Biosciences), Dr
Robert Fagan (Biosciences) and Prof. Jamie Hobbs (Physics and Astronomy) at
The University of Sheffield. The project is funded by the BBSRC.

In this multidisciplinary project you will join a team applying
state-of-the-art techniques of structural and molecular biology to
investigate the way spores of pathogenic bacteria germinate and emerge as
metabolically active cells. For this first appointment we seek an expert in
electron cryomicroscopy (CryoEM) and/or advanced protein X-ray
crystallography. Experience in molecular biology techniques would be an
advantage. In later stages of the project, we will also appoint an atomic
force microscopist to join the project.

We will study germination in two selected organisms- *Clostridium
sporogenes* and *Clostridioides difficile*. *C. sporogenes *is
non-pathogenic but very closely related to C. botulinum which causes
botulism, a potentially lethal paralysis. *C. difficile* is the leading
cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, especially in hospital patients
and the elderly.

We will use CryoEM (cryotomography, single particle analysis and electron
crystallography), AFM, fluorescence microscopy & molecular biology to
understand how this remarkable, but little understood, metamorphosis takes
place. We are superbly equipped for all this work, and we are part of a
thriving community of enthusiastic and collaborative molecular
microbiologists, structural biologists and biophysicists.

Applicants are expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication
skills, be highly independent and committed to research in a fast-moving
and competitive field.

The University of Sheffield is an internationally recognised centre of
excellence in biology, with world-class research facilities. Research at
Sheffield was ranked 4th in the UK for biological sciences and 1st in
physics in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Sheffield is a vibrant
and friendly city and incorporates part of the Peak District National Park
within the city boundaries.

For further details about the post, see https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/jobs.
The job reference is UOS034290.

The deadline for applications is 21 September 2022.

[ccp4bb] Vacancy for a Scientific Programmer at EMDB (EMBL-EBI, Cambridge, UK)

2022-09-14 Thread Gerard Kleywegt

Dear colleagues,

EMBL-EBI is looking to recruit a Scientific Programmer to work on the Electron
Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB; emdb-empiar.org), one of the three core archives of
the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB; wwpdb.org).

The Scientific Programmer will work in a small but tight international team
focusing on managing the flow of data into the archive (data-in; deposition,
validation and curation) and the public release of the data (production). In the
past two years, EMDB has doubled in size to over 20,000 entries and the archive
is set to continue to grow very rapidly in the years to come, so this is a very
exciting time to join the effort.

More information can be found in the vacancy notice at
https://www.embl.org/jobs/position/EBI02066

A detailed description of the role and its requirements is available from
https://oc.ebi.ac.uk/s/j1g7grHEJoeO9BJ

The application period for this post will close on 23 October 2022 and (virtual)
interviews will take place on 17 or 18 November.

Please feel free to bring this position to the attention of anyone with the
right skillset who might be interested.

Best wishes,

Gerard Kleywegt
