[ccp4bb] New open position: MAX IV MX-group, Lund, Sweden

2019-10-28 Thread Uwe Müller
Support scientist (1 year), MAX IV, MX group

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s
top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based
in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand,
explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund
University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with
state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering,
physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it
will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking
experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. As
a national laboratory, MAX IV is operated in agreement with governmental
regulations, and in compliance with major funders such as the Swedish Research
Council (VR) and the Wallenberg Foundation. 250 people are currently employed
at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded. The facility is in a ramp-up
phase with 3 beamlines now receiving users and 13 more scheduled to be
commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years. The facility
is dimensioned for 25-28 beamlines.

The MX-group is looking for a structural biology expert, with a strong interest
in operating complex scientific instrumentation of the BioMAX beamline and
supporting our international academic and industrial user communities.

BioMAX is the first operational beamline for macromolecular crystallography at
MAX IV, which runs within the MAX IV user program for the last 3 years. The
beamline comprises a state-of-the-art installation with high performance x-ray
transport and control systems, goniometry, x-ray detectors and a cryogenic
sample changer (See also: http://www.maxiv.se/biomax).

The beamline is operated by the international and interdisciplinary
BioMAX-team, which is part of the MX-group. Within this group we are also
developing jointly a new beamlines project: MicroMAX, a serial crystallography
beamline for studying protein dynamics and the FragMAX project, which is aiming
to develop and operate a crystallographic fragment screening facility at MAX IV.

This position offers ample possibilities to exploit the beamline capabilities
and to contribute to the support of complex research tasks of the growing user
communities. Due to the broad spectrum of activities, this position is ideal to
develop a related portfolio of expertise and knowledge by the candidate.

engineers of the MX-group and MAX IV
  * Regular scientific and technical support of external users during their
beamtime
  *   Regular beamline commissioning tasks
  * Contribute to the on-going in-house research program in regard to
fragment-based screening or serial crystallography

 Required Qualifications:

  * PhD or Master university degree in structural biology or natural sciences
in subjects of relevance for BioMAX
  * Demonstrated experiences in carrying out structural biology projects
using macromolecular crystallography
  * Proven ability to cooperate well within a team
  * Excellent command in written and spoken English
  * A demonstrated ability to work independently
  * Significant experiences in operating complex instrumentation projects at
all stages

 Additionally, desirable qualifications:

  * Experience in the use of synchrotron radiation MX-beamlines
  * Experiences in ligand screening, especially fragment screening
  * Experiences in serial crystallography methods
  * Interest and experience in scientific use of techniques of interest for
BioMAX (i.e. experiments, data analysis, publication and presentation of
results)

MAX IV operates 24/7 and you will be part in on-call service of the MX-group
for user support, including weekends and bank holidays in accordance to the
working hour regulation.

This is a one year temporary postion.

On call services may apply in the future.

[ccp4bb] Open position: Senior Lecturer in Structural Biology

2016-10-31 Thread Uwe Müller
Dear all,
let me please put your attention to this open position:

Lund University, Faculty of Medicine,

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is regularly ranked as one of the
world’s top 100 higher education institutions. The University has 41 000
students and 7 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in
our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human
condition.

The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for
education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programmes
are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the
faculty’s strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within
experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health
sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700
students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for
students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

Job
A position as Senior Lecturer in Structural Biology, at the Department of
Experimental Medical Science in Lund.

Department and subject
Structural biology involves identifying the relationship between the
three-dimensional structure of proteins and their function. The full
interpretation of results obtained in in vivo and in vitro studies often
requires a three dimensional structure. To fully understand the function of a
biological macromolecule knowledge on its structure is essential. Many methods
in structural biology also enable the study of protein dynamics especially in
macromolecular complexes. Increased knowledge regarding structural biology is
expected to facilitate the development of new principles for drugs. Thanks to
the large investments in synchrotron radiation (MAX IV) and spallation (ESS),
from Lund University (LU) and national/(international institutions, great
opportunities to increase our knowledge on the molecular structural level of
medically relevant issues are at hand. A prerequisite for the Medical faculty
to be able to be a leading player in this development is the recruitment of
excellent researchers in the field of structural biology. These should be able
to take advantage of the MAX IV and the ESS for structural studies and
participate in the development of substances that affect medically relevant
proteins which can then be used as chemical tools in biological research and as
drugs against major diseases. To strengthen LU`s future positioning as an
internationally leading center in structural biology in combination with a
strong environment with competent and strong biomedical/scientific units in
Lund, Malmö and the Öresund region we wish to recruit a Senior Lecturer who can
lead and develop medical structural biology and drug development at LU in
cooperation with ESS and MAX IX.

continue own qualified research. The Senior Lecturer shall participate in
teaching at the Faculty´s various educational programmes in the first, second
and third cycles. In the employment internal and/or external missions and other
duties may be added.

Qualifications
Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance states that a person
shall be qualified for appointment as Senior Lecturer if he or she has
demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has corresponding
research competence. Furthermore, evidence of teaching skills is required as
well as at least five weeks of teacher training courses on higher education
teaching and learning or having acquired equivalent knowledge by other means,
unless there are valid reasons.

Basis for assessment
The applicant must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise of value
to the subject area, particular importance shall be attached to scientific
skills. The applicant must have demonstrated research and teaching expertise of
value to the subject area, particular importance shall be attached to

Considering additional qualifications is international networking and larger
research grants Importance shall also be attached to teaching skills, the
ability to supervise doctoral students and administrative skills. Teaching
skills shall be demonstrated in both teaching and supervision in both basic
courses, advanced courses and postgraduate education. Proven ability in
academic leadership, ability to co-operate, and proven ability to integrate
with the surrounding community will also be taken into consideration. The
