First Announcement
The 67th Annual Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference will be held
October 29th - 31st at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing
Education
Dear Colleague:
On behalf of the program committee, you and your colleagues are
cordially invited to join us for the 67th Annual Pittsburgh
Diffraction Conference. Program Topics RNA Crystallography, Protein
Small Angle X-ray Scattering, Diffraction Studies of Materials, Small
Molecule Neutron Diffraction, and Crystallization of Protein-Protein
Complexes. In addition, a new feature of the conference is the
Pittsburgh Diffraction Society Future Leaders Symposium, which will
highlight outstanding research carried out by graduate and
undergraduate students.
Workshop on sulfur SAD Phasing: The conference will be preceded by a
hands-on workshop on sulfur-SAD phasing organized by John Rose & Bi-
Cheng Wang on October 28th. Note the workshop is limited to 50
participants.

many opportunities for formal and informal discussions with the
speakers. The Chung Soo Yoo Award will be given to graduate students
for best poster presentation.
For students who wish to present a poster or participate in the PDS
Future Leaders Symposium please see the abstract preparation
guidelines at the bottom of this message.
Note: The Abstract Deadline is Friday October 16th
Conference Registration
To insure maximum participation, the cost of attending the conference
has been kept to a minimum ($75.00 for professionals, registered
graduate students are free).
Conference Accommodations
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Georgia Center for
Continuing Education at the conference rate of $89.00 (plus 7% sales
tax).

Conference Workshop
A Practical Guide to Sulfur SAD Phasing
Organized by John Rose & Bi-Cheng Wang
October 28th (9:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Sulfur-SAD phasing, using soft X-rays, is attractive in that the
sulfur atoms from the methionine or cysteine residues found in the
native protein can be used as phasing probes. This eliminates the
requirement for selenomethionyl labeling, which may be problematic in
eukaryotic systems, or heavy atom labeling, which is time consuming.
However, the sulfur anomalous scattering signal is small and care must
be taken to optimize all aspects of the experiment.
The hands-on workshop will focus on our (and others experience) in the
optimization of all aspects of the Sulfur-SAD experiment.

Abstract Preparation Guidelines
Abstracts should be submitted to Prof. M. Gary Newton (Poster
Chairman) via e-mail to new...@secsg.uga.edu by October 16, 2009.
Abstracts should be supplied as a Microsoft Word document with 1-inch
margins. Text should be written using the Arial 12-point font.
Title: The title should be in bold face and not more than 250
characters. The first word of the title should be capitalized and all
other letters are lower case unless they are proper names or acronyms,
for example,
"Reaction pathway of ADP-ribose pyrophosphatase, revealed by .....".
A blank line should be inserted after the Title.
Authors/Affiliations: The name of the presenting author must appear
first in the list of authors. No one may be the first author on more
than ONE contribution. The author's affiliations, in the authorship
order, should directly follow the author list. If authors come from
more than one institution institutional affiliation should be
indicated by a superscripted integer.
A blank line should be inserted after the Authors/Affiliations.
Text: The text body should be not more than 1,800 characters.
Note the maximum Poster size is 48 (w) X 42 (h).
Abstract deadline is Friday October 16th.
