Ha, cool, Fred. I just recently in 2022 I showed up for my Pennsylvania to
San Francisco flight with a 1969 VW MicroBus crankcase (with its guts) in a
large box, hand carried it (oof) into the airport and sent it through as an
additional checked bag for, I think, $50 additional on the spot. Astounded
that that actually still worked. Swapped out the top end in my buddy's
gravel driveway in Tiburon and it's back in service. Can't say that I 100%
"enjoyed" this particular instance of the old fashioned thrifty way of
doing things, but it is kinda bragable :)

Jon, thanks so much for the gift of code!

Unfortunately the list seems to have scrubbed away the attachments.
If they're short, could you pls paste them directly in a reply as text so
the programs are preserved in this thread for future?
(Presuming they're not too big and that's not a rules-bender here)
Alternatively you could email to me direct using my firstname.lastname at

Fun side effect of this is that I now have to try and resurrect my eighties

into a VMX -> RSX ForTran porting convo!

[cctalk] tape duplicator program for pdp11

2024-06-14 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi,
Just got a real (Cipher M990 on TS05-emulating controller) tape drive
running and would like to make exact copies of some [9-track] tapes "to
guard against disaster." Probably will also do some imaging, so bonus if
the candidate program can handle that too.

This is on an 11/34; I don't have a good q-bus tape controller yet or I'd
try it on uVAX with NetBSD or something less "exciting" :)

Anyone know of good programs to do this with only one tape drive? Don't
care which operating system.

Been looking through DECUS archives but have found nothing yet (manually
reading thru - 1/3 of the way done, maybe there's a better way to scan
these?).

[cctalk] Re: RD54 Maxtor XT-2190 w/one long meep

2024-02-26 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Thanks for the good ideas and convo everyone.

Now please do note that I can definitely hear motor/platter spinup
happening so it's definitely not "heads stuck to platter" stiction.

I hear the lock unlatch and I *think* I even hear the heads load and fly
(comparing what I hear on this drive to other drives I've actually seen the
guts of in flying action) so I substantially doubt it's "arm stuck to lock
pad goo" stiction.

So we've made it through a lot of the powerup sequence and the problem is
at the final part - the track scan up and back down the surface - the phase
when the signature "...blearrt-meelrp..." happens :)

And yes I believe from memory that XT-2190 is supposed to make the same
track scan noise as the XT-1140 (I have an XT-1140 running perfectly as a
fake RD54 in another pdp here).

So could my behaviour of being hung at the final phase - the track scan
noise - be the result of a lost servo track? Thinking about that, didn't
someone on this list kill an XT-2190 recently by taking an outrageous
magnet to it? Did you get the same track scan failure as I'm getting?

Confused electronics on the PCB?

Something else?

Where would one begin diagnosing this particular problem?

I did try the wrist twist torquing thing.

And lightly whacking side of housing with palm of hand during track scan
noise. Declining to do that hard, tho.

Powered off and back on (to retry) probably near a hundred times now.

Heated it gently in front of our forced-air furnace duct until comfortably
warm to touch - probably near 105 F.

All these produced absolutely zero behaviour change.

2024-02-23 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi! Remember the blearrt-meelrp sounding seek oscillation noise
that the RD54 makes when you turn it on -- after it spins up, unlatches and
loads the heads?

Well, I took a chance on an el-(c)heapo ePay special RD54 that does all
these things perfectly up until the seek oscillation thing and then only
makes one steady m- sound that seems to last indefinitely (or at least
until I get tired of listening to it after a few minutes).

Would anyone here know enough about these disks to venture a guess at where
to begin troubleshooting this?

thx
jake

P.S. If I'm being too vague, let me restate: I can hear it spin up,
bearings sound normal, hear it unlock its head lock latch, then a perfectly
*slight* noise of head actuation and the normal accompanying barely audible
riding-on-air head noise. Then I expect to hear the two seek tones, but
only get one steady seek tone that lasts (I assume) forever.

I have sitting in front of me a PDP-11/83 running ULTRIX-11 v3.1 on MSCP SCSI
via the CMD CQD-200 controller. It’s working beautifully for me, pointed at a
SCSI2SD with “drives” around the size of an RA81.

I just installed it last week from a replica original distro tape I made.
Happy to send the image to you. You can boot the generic kernel and run
/.setup/setup to reconfigure it to your hardware needs, recompile kernel, etc.

If you have the means to use it, I could also make you a physical
distribution tape so you can experience a real virgin install in all its proper
glory.

I really did want to do that, but the target hardware is PDT-11/150, my
only system with working 8" floppies, and it can't support a big disk
(though it just occurred to me I could probably fake similar situation with
a TU-58 emulator and new sysgen!).

If I can get one of my bigger PDP-11s the ability to talk to floppies, then
sure. Been trying, but don't know if that'll ever happen with things going
the way they are :\

Actually this TU-58 emulator idea is starting to seem like a fun stunt..
Three serial ports on these PDT-11/150s, plus modem and console, so I could
have lots of "larger," if slow (I think 2400 is the limit), storage devices
on the ol' gal.

Thanks for making me think, Nigel!

PDT-11 Virtual Terminal Monitor v1.07

2022-03-01 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi!
Anyone remember how to use this program that announces itself as "PDT-11
Virtual Terminal Monitor v1.07" ? I found it on a floppy of RT-11 v4.0
with my pile of PDT-11 treasures (which amazingly still seem to read fine
and work wonderfully; disk file timestamps around 1979 - 1982).

I thought maybe it was a term program, since these PDTs were kind of
famous for that sort of deployment, and tried looping back pin 2 to pin 3
on each serial + modem port and typing some characters, but nothing shows
up in vterm. It does come out of some mode into a command mode, I think,
when I send a break to the console. ^C kills it from there and I can get
back to RT.

I found online a DECUS program of the same name (vterm), submitted by DEC
circa 1979, and am wondering if this is the same beastie I've discovered on
my 8" floppy:
https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/academic/computer-science/history/pdp-11/decus/110417.html
; however, when I try to click through that decus website, the actual
packages themselves seem to have been lost! Does anyone know where to
obtain the actual files that came with this 110417 from DECUS? And if I'm
on the right track, here? It would be cool to have this PDT-11 functioning
as God intended if this vterm is actually a terminal emulator type of
thing...

You can install 2.11BSD rather normally using VTserver. It makes your modern
computer into a pseudo tape protocol via your serial port to the pdp console.
It was written for this purpose and I’ve successfully installed bsd this way
without having to contrive install images using simulators (which for me takes
the fun out of owning real iron)..

You could also raw-write a bootable rt-11 image onto a floppy using vtserver,
boot it and from there install rt to big disk.

Also, someone posted v7m floppy images on here last year. You could get RT-11 +
Kermit up , then transfer and write v7m floppies from there. Beware of the
problem of formatting RX-50 floppies if you decide to try this.

I really hope Someone finds a newer ultrix floppy distro soon!

These options stick a bit closer to the real pdp experience if you’re into
that.

Good luck

tamayatech let down

2021-12-20 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
I think I should pass on my experience as a warning to others.

I googled around for a particular PDP-11 board I needed and tamayatech.com
was a hit, with "buy now" option and condition: refurbished. Seemed
convincing and the price was in the sane ballpark. So I bought it, paid
through their ecommerce routine, etc.

Sent a mail thanking them and asking if it would be despatched soon as I
had work time off in the coming week.. No reply.

Waited a week and telephoned their phone number from the purchase
confirmation email. No answer. Left message.

Several (well over ten) repeated email and phone contact attempts through
the last months (this began early November) to no avail. There has been
absolutely no response. So my conclusion: it looks as though they took my
credit card and never shipped it, then just ignored me. I hope the fellow's
okay but feel quite thoroughly ripped off.

So 'buyer' beware.

Interestingly their SEO is rather well maintained and punching DEC part
numbers into Google, etc. often results in a hit to their site. So they're
at least keeping that part of the business updated.

Anybody else with similar experience? Any way to rectify the situation?

I was just reading the RT 11 5.7 documentation the other day and noticed the

How about all members here buy some big disks and take part in a number of
curated torrents? Publicize torrent health so it’s highly visible. Organize
custodians (preferably using folks who are already doing an excellent job).
Cost of access to the archives is that the prospective user can evidence that
he’s helping sustain the collection. Sure there are holes in this plan. But
it’d be a good actionable start while we’re on the topic and it can be

vtserver for geezer '11s

Hi,
I modified vtserver to work on pdp11/34 and similar - the older machines
that have the

00 00 00 00
@

odt prompt.

I'm afraid I didn't do a very thorough job (hack night and just wanted to
get it working) and in retrospect I wish I would've made a conditional
argument to put it in this mode. Perhaps we should collaborate on adding
this properly and adding other desirable features like compression for
incoming "all zero" blocks when pulling images in from real hardware, etc.

It's here if you'd like to use it:

https://github.com/jritorto/vtserver

You can run it with ./a.out -odt to facilitate its talking to the pdp at
power-on and loading its initial boot sequence via odt in octal. You have
to run the primary bootstrap with L 14 and S because I botched
the parsing a bit in my rush to get things going.

Re: 2.11bsd rogue can't build

2020-03-06 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Thanks for the leads, everyone!

I made a little progress: I did read enough about ld to get it to load
the .o files from the initial cc run into a separate I&d overlaid
executable. But when I execute it, it gives me Segmentation fault
(core dumped).. There was one complaint of Undefined during the ld run
even though I said -lc_p (and validated that _environ is in that .a
file using nm.

Undefined:
_environ

but it seemed to succeed in building the executable despite that.
Well, I'm guessing it succeeded because the output file rogue is
sitting there afterwards and has been marked executable, which,
according to the man page, ld doesn't mark that way unless it
succeeds.

[35] root--> ld -t -v -M -i -X -x init.o main.o level.o score.o
machdep.o inventory.o -Z hit.o monster.o -Z message.o move.o -Z
object.o pack.o play.o -Z curses.o random.o ring.o -Z room.o -Z save.o
spec_hit.o -Z throw.o trap.o -Z use.o zap.o -Y -o rogue -lcurses
-ltermlib -lc_p

[36] root--> size rogue
textdatabss dec hex

overlays: 7616,6144,7488,1856,4352,6144,3840,6336

[37] root--> ./rogue
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

See anything amiss in my process? That Undefined _environ during ld
still bugs me.
Is the next step dissecting the program or its core with adb to find
what's wrong?

thx

pdp11 MicroPower/Pascal

2020-01-10 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi,
Would anyone still have a copy of latest pdp11 MicroPower/Pascal?
I'm trying to have a retro programming contest / party at my house and
want to feature Pascal along with Macro-11 and maybe c on a real 11/23
with RL02s under TSX. Hoping to hang like ten users at once on the
'ol girl and make 'em really feel the speed. I might let up a little
and run the contest on my 11/73 with scsi if it's too terrible :)

Anyway, looked around the net for hours and can't find a copy of
MicroPower/Pascal, so if anyone can help, I'd be grateful.

Found TSX-Plus, though! Big Thanks again to Lyle and whomever's
running the classiccmp site these days!

Re: Got it: RD54 formatting write protect solved

2019-11-19 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Nice going!

Related story:
I had probs formatting a maxtor 11xx (not an actual xt-2190 but really close)
as an rd54 due to geometry differences and binary patched that formatter to
deal with it using the xxdp equivalent of od. Have the patched xxdp formatter
binary on an rl02 pack here if anyone needs it.

Works a treat, close enough that dec software thinks it’s an rd54.

Sun Ultra 1 PROM update to OBP 3.11.1 or better

2019-10-20 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi,
My pal Dave just gave me a very nice original Ultra 1 Creator! Found a
nice 1K 146GB disk and 1GB genuine X7004 Sun RAM from good old MemoryX
and this store I'd never used before called DiscTech (great ecomm site and
decent prices afaict), so this baby's shaping up to be a fantastic and
affordable rescue!

Alas, it seems some corporate best practices aficionado from the company
that was entrusted with the care and feeding of Sun has unilaterally and
unceremoniously "lost" all the old patch clusters for these machines.

Anyone still have them? The particular one I need is the patch SUNWflell
from anytime after late 1997.

This will allow her OpenBoot to play nice with 64-bit operating systems
like Solaris and the Illumos-based Tribblix, OpenSXCE, etc, which I'm
thinking will be extremely cool to see running on a 25 year old machine!

thx much.

P.S. While I'm at it, anyone know how to get UC04 to talk to directly to
plain scsi disks and tapes instead of these lunatic ESDI controller bridge
things?

Re: modern stuff

2018-10-25 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Tangent:
I have a large bin of perhaps a hundred working (last checked circa 2002)
single board computers in the warehouse (Western Pennsylvania) with i960
cpus if anyone's interested.

They were the Switch Control Processors from FORE Systems ASX200
switches, quite fully functional little computers and all self-sufficient
on one board. When we ported to x86, the poor i960 ones became unwanted
extremely rapidly; hence the surplus. Never had the heart to remand them
to the skip.

There's Serial, Ethernet, 7 segment display array, flash, RAM, clock,
etc. and a VME bus interface. Guys used to hook them naked to a couple
wires for power source and run them in their office window to scroll
messages. Would make for a swell massively, if lethargically, parallel
compute project.

Would enthusiastically trade for pdp11 stuff, or donate to interesting
project even if you have nothing to offer.

qd32 trouble

2018-02-20 Thread Jacob Ritorto via cctalk
Hi all,
Would anyone here be able to help me troubleshoot my qd32 controller? I
have a pdp11/73 that's mostly working, boots 2.11bsd from rl02 okay, but I
need my big disk to work so I can load the rest of the distro.
I've been following the manual for the qd32 to enter the geometry of my
real working Fuji m2333 (jumpered correctly according to the manuals), but
when I load the special command into the qd32's SP register that's supposed
to load the geometry table I entered in pdp11 memory to the qd32's novram,
I get a bad status value from the qd32's SP register and it remains
unresponsive when I try to store the geometry. If I go ahead and try the
built-in qd32 format command, it responds similarly. When I pull in mkfs
from tape (vtserver) and try anyway, despite the failures, to run mkfs on
the m2333, I get an !online error from the standalone unix mkfs. The disk
does respond (the select light flashes and I can hear heads actuating), but
without geometry and format, I'm obviously dead in the water.

I understand that there used to exist some Emulex qd32/pdp11 diagnostics
that could help the situation, but my previous attempts to find copies have
come up short.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

thx
jake

Re: Seeking RL02K cartridge

Hi Aaron,
I have some extra RL02 packs and would be glad to lend you a pack for
free if you like; maybe for keeps. But you're probably not on the same
continent as me, so shipping would probably be costly. If you have no
better offers, let me know and we'll work it out. Can also put bits on it
if it'd be advantageous to have something written on it beforehand.
