That would have been back when Quad was run by Peter J. Walker
who was a no-nonsense engineer. Unfortunately the company is

As to real audiophile scams, there are companies making
"audiophile" ethernet switches and even special, very
expensive linear power supplies for ethernet switches

I don't know, but if you had asked "What would our world be like if the
first home computers were to have had SmallTalk or even ALGOL instead of
BASIC?" I would have said "much better".

I started out with FORTRAN and 6800 assembler, but my first real
programming job was in BASIC. I am fortunate in that they thought
me Pascal in university, and I then got exposed to a bunch of other
real high level languages - if I hadn't, and had continued with
BASIC, I would probably have ended up as a pretty crap programmer.

Password requirements are annoying, and the initial setup is very

I am involved in stuff on USENET all the time.  Many groups have been

destroyed and are pretty much useless but many of them are still going

Definitely in x86 mode (the blades came preconfigured with either
Windows or Red Hat).

Each blade could have 128, 256 or 512M of DIMM SDRAM, and have
3 network interfaces and one or two 2.5" hard disks.
The chassis has two hot-swappable 450W supplies.

(when they got acquired by HP). I have two of their early RLX 24 blade
enclosures, one fully populated with 24 transmeta-based processor blades,

Kan väga skivorna/caddyn i morgon. Maskinerna är tunga, speciellt

For non-Swedish speakers:

Yes, I still have a Proliant 6000, a DL380, and a tower-type machine with 8
disk slots (will check type later), and at least 20 caddies and disks.

Will check weight of disks/caddies tomorrow. The computers are heavy,
especially the 6000.
