[cctalk] Response from the list manager
Is it just me? I have recently sent an email to this guy about two different topics. There was no response in either case. What is going on? Or am I missing something? Many thanks, peter vp
[cctalk] Minicomputer front panel.
I know this is sacrilege but I am looking for the front panel of a *Data General Nova *and/or *a DEC PDP 8/11/12/15*. Why? I collect artefacts from the days of the minicomputer and earlier and I want them for my collection/display. They should be not too damaged and of course do not need to be functional. I would be willing to pay postage/freight. Any offers? Any offers? Peter PS Please don't shout at me!

Stage 2 Macroprocessor
Guys, Has anyone out there in the big wide world there got a version of the Stage 2 Macroprocessor than is ready to run on a Windows PC? I don't mean the build-it-yourself version. Re: AOL CD and other old PC software...
I have a collection of British magazine CDs and DVDs from the mid-1995ish to 2013ish. They contain tools, programs, etc. I tried 5 and they mounted under Win10 so they should work on old win releases: XP,7,8? Would anyone be interested in acquiring these? Talk to me and we can work out how. peter || | | || | | || Peter Van Peborgh 62 St Mary's Rise Writhlington Radstock SomersetBA3 3PD UK 01761 439 234 "Our times are in God's wise and loving hands" || | | || | | ||

OK, it boots off a DOS 3.3 floppy if that floppy is inserted before it attempts to boot from the hard disk. If I wait for it to do its "system file not found" bit, followed by a subsequent prompt to insert boot media and press a key, it attempts to access the floppy drive but then goes off into la-la land. Odd. But anyway, taking the successful floppy boot route, I can certainly access the hard disk in terms of bringing up directory listings and TYPEing files to the display. So far, attempts to run anything from the drive just result in a lock-up (keyboard immediately unresponsive, hard reset required). There appear to be DOS utils on the drive, and command.com, but I've not checked for hidden system files yet. fdisk shows the partition as active. > Got an IBM "Advanced Diagnostics" floppy to try? No, but I see that the minuszerodegrees site has an image, so I'll write that out and see what happens. Looking at the drive contents, incidentally, I didn't see anything that explains (or interacts with) that unusual video hardware - it basically just holds DOS and a bunch of documents written by the original owner. Maybe they got suckered into buying this fancy graphics hardware without having any actual need for it, and then of course EGA and VGA came along and rendered it obsolete anyway. > XT controllers tended to NOT be interchangeable, even between various > OEMs of Xebec! Yes - something that people often seem to forget, too. I've run into that quite often, where someone will hang onto an old drive because of the contents, but they'll dump the controller that it was formatted against. > I don't know what the incompatability was. I don't think there was any kind of standard at all for what the low level looked like - vendors were free to do what they wanted in terms of what values they used for flags and how they actually ordered things within the sector header. I suppose there were some tweaks made over time for optimization or reliability (or at least, recovery) reasons, too, which is why even a single vendor had a few different incompatible formats. I expect it was the same in the SCSI and IDE worlds, but of course with those "the controller" which handles formatting is really part of the package, so it wasn't an issue. Ancient transistor ?computer board (Peter Van Peborgh)
Guys, I now know it is an early CDC board. IT had C*NT*OLDATA on the reverse - how I missed that must be attributed to old age. (Thanks Doug) Here are shots of the back: https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPozyBB3zp7XYcP79 Any idea what the row of hole opposite the contacts were? Testing points? But then why holes and not short pillars? Some are labelled on both sides. Continuing in hope, peter

Unusual Punched Cards
Guys, I have been collecting all types of computer punched cards for a few years now. In the distant past I actually used them! I am desperately looking for two types I do not have been able to find a sample of: * Jacquard fabric/carpet loom cards. OK, not computer but the ancestor, for completeness of the history. There may be several formats of these. * Original Hollerith card, 12 rows by 24 columns. Once again, this is a long shot. Well if you don't ask, you never get! Thank you for your interest. Peter
