Re: Aaron Nabil & pdp-8.org

2017-10-10 Thread Doug Ingraham via cctalk
The whois record for pdp8.org lists its DNS servers as ns.spiritone.com and
ns2.spiritone.com.
What is interesting is that neither of those entries are in the
spiritone.com dns servers from my
point of view. However DNSStuff can get A records for those queries. This
means that they are
providing different views probably depending on if you are inside their
network or outside. And
they probably let DNSStuff in because that makes stuff look less broken.
The simplest solution
is to host the record with the registrar or one of the professional hosting
services. Usually the
registrar will host the record as part of the registration fee.

I wrote to Aaron a couple of days ago, and mentioned Jay's offer to him.

I did hear back from him -- he's aware of the problem and does have his site
backed up.
(He didn't volunteer any details about his plans, but I assume he's got things

trying to check if there might have been some missing parts that I did
not get, but it looks complete (at least so as there were no dirs
hidden from general public). The site seems to be gone. The address
seems to be gone from DNS, but I may try again later.

My copy appears to be 724MB. The .zip is 619 MB and the .7z

Might be obvious, but since we know the IP, and that seems to be
stable one can just modify /etc/hosts to have a pdp-8.org address and
just mirror the result that way.

True. If it's still around (even if only via IP address), judicious use of

interesting website I feared might be purged from the Internet, though so far

Not even slightly working for me. pdp8.org entered in a browser times

Same here. I get a "server failed" DNS error when trying to look up pdp8.org.

However, one of my ISP's nameservers still has the ip address cached for
pdp8.org as 216.99.193.149. The pdp8.org webserver is still active on that ip
address, however I cannot display the site in a browser because there are
multiple websites on that ip address and the default one is some art gallery
rather than pdp8.org.

It looks to me that if the domain name hosting is moved elsewhere, the problem
should be sorted out.

If there is a danger of the webserver going away, putting 216.99.193.149 into
a hosts file for pdp8.org (and maybe www.pdp8.org) might allow a browser to
find the site.

Regards,
Peter Coghlan.
