You simply type the files from the command prompt and the escape sequences
in the file tell the terminal to load the font data rather than display it
on the screen.

I'd second the Z88. A lot of people get put off by the keyboard but it
actually works really well, and I'm a proper mechanical keyboard snob. You
get can a proper turn of speed up on it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. There was some activity on this a
good few years ago. The most recent video development is probably the
support for graphics devices in SIMH by Matt - see

Unless you've got a specific reason to run OpenVMS 8.4 for an Alphaserver
1000A I'd recommend a version more in keeping with the age of the machine,
either a variant of 7.3 or something earlier.
How much memory do you have installed?

CDBurnerXP is the one to use - as recommended by Stephen Hoffman himself.

See if you can get hold of an old Plextor SCSI drive - they tend to have
good compatibility with older kit.

In the Alpha stable I have a 1000A fully loaded with SSB and an external
SSB enclosure running VMS 7.3. I also have the desktop 3000/600 which was
bought for my PhD work with 2GB external DAT and 24 bit graphics. I have
two rackmount 3000/600s and a 3000/800.
