I have a problem burning DVD+/-R with k3b.
Everything seems fine until it reaches round about 965MB. Then everything
hangs: k3b growisofs. I have to use CTRL+ALT+ESC to kill k3b. Same with
growisofs.

In growisofs there is a nice tool dvd+rw-mediainfo which you could try
for learning if your media is recongized or not.
Just call cdrecord -atip
