log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m.%R
to the "global" part of your smb.conf.
The %R gives "the selected protocol level after protocol
a matching BBU these days if your controller is not
very recent. And depending on where you are located and how good your
power supply is, you don't want to activate write caching without a
BBU.

yeah, until a disk fails on a 40 disk array and the chassis LEDs on the
backplane don't light up to indicate which disk it is and your
operations monkey pulls the wrong one and crash the whole raid.
that is why I put a label on every drive tray that is visible without
pulling the disk.

a NTP-job every hour started by cron that corrects the
internal time and if your internal clock runs too fast, the system
time may be reset every hour so that the cron-job will start twice. As
I said, I don't know if cron-daemon has a mechanism that would avoid
