I've been doing:

yum --exclude=\*nvidia\*, since I'm not currently taking the CR updates.

Frankly, nothing beats Recoll.

https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/

Unfortunately there are only packages for CentOS 7:

http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/centos71/

I've installed Recoll on all my client's desktops (running Slackware
14.1 mostly), and they're very happy with it.

cheers,

find is a command-line utility to find $WHATEVER on your system. Recoll
is a desktop search application that can be used by users like the staff
in our local school, for example. They use it extensively indeed.

If upgrading to EL7 is an option it has GNOME Tracker builtin. You get
desktop search right after installation. It has a bug that files can be
missing from search results sometimes (and can appear again in next
search), but in general works well enough for me. Hope the upcoming
EL7.3 can have fixes for that bug.

This is a known issue. I think you can find mention of it on the forums,
but I don't remember where I actually found mention of it.

It has to do with what will be needed when 7.3 comes along.

Later versions of kmod-nvidia are for EL7.3 (not backward compatible).
You need to update your CentOS system using the CR repo. Or wait until
the full release of CentOS 7.3.1611 (next week?).

Um this morning my rsync mirror script grabbed the package tree from

smbldap-userdel may not have flushed the user cache (probably sssd) on
your system. You can do so with "sss_cache -E" and then check again.

Most USB barcode scanners can operate in so called keyboard wedge mode
(either implicitly or explicitly via some physical switch). In that
case, you'll just see the scanned codes as keyboard input.

I did not yet dig into how I can isolate this scanner input, so that
it is only read by one specific process (e.g. after identifying the
USB device). I think this is a pure Linux-related question, it is
unrelated to the scanners (just as if you would attach 2 keyboards).
If you have a recipe for that, just let me know ;-).

One of the scanners I tried is this cheap scanner from dx.com:

http://www.dx.com/p/xyl-901-handheld-usb-wired-laser-barcode-scanner-black-yellow-286474#.WEvbKnUrI_M

It just works out-of-the-box when connected to a Linux-system.
Start "cat" and you'll see the scanned codes.
