Re: Internship Job Description?

2007-03-21 Thread Sonya Hughes
Hatton,

I've had good luck with emphasizing the learning potential of a position. Often
young developers, especially those who are just getting into the field, or
still studying in college, are really excited at the idea of getting to work on
real-world projects with a mentor, and having the ability to build their
portfolio at the same time.

This is a less polite, if accurate, description of a couple jobs I've had.

Wow, Ben, tell us how you really feel ;)

Actually the interesting thing of this job is the fact that there
isn't so much HTML/CSS as we have the design folks for that. I'm
actually just concerned with building whatever dynamic elements a web
application needs.

Re: Great article on Telecommuting

It's important to acknowledge that as a group, techies (i.e., us) are more
used than most to asynchronous and electronic communication. After all,
humans are social great apes - evolved to respond below the conscious level
to touch and presence. Many just don't feel comfortable working with people
they can't talk to f2f.

Okay, that's the psych degree coming out. ;-)

There are also security and IP considerations - sure, at some point you have
to trust your employees at least a little (even if you're the CIA or NSA),
but it's still easier to control materials and data within a centralized
workplace than in a distributed organization.

Given the amount of lost personal info that companies have, I'm
not quite convinced that it's easier to control centralized data.

Somewhere recently I saw another statistic relating to lost stuff: in
addition to all the laptops, PDAs, etc the FBI misplaces every year,
hundreds of their firearms go missing too. The situation is much improved
over a few years ago, but still

I never got around to the point in my previous email: there are sometimes
real reasons - whether concrete or warm-and-fuzzy - that telecommuting is
disallowed. On the other hand, if you can get a potential employer to
realize they're wasting their money and discounting excellent prospects by
disallowing telecommuting for no good reason, you're helping them and
yourself!
