Finally resolved this. Downloaded the SDK (35MB) which included javac.exe and the JRE. I put javac.exe in the classpath and also followed the previous suggestions about modifying classpath. The first test worked! Of course that sample test was from the DOS prompt, so I'm now getting ready to do
