I think we should call it horizontal_datum_name (since there are also vertical
datums). We also need various other names

Thanks for your helpful email, and sorry for slow response.
Ok you mean that we could add new projections easily to the CF

Yes, you could do this with a trac ticket, like ticket 72, which proposes to
add the geos projection. See

I'm not sure I understand your question - do you mean to ask if these
additions to CF would be sufficient to describe most WKT definitions
in pure CF metadata (without the WKT)?
By all means my

I think the CF-approach of being self-explanatory rather than to rely
on external tables/database has worked very well so far. If I
understand this thread correctly, the question is how to describe a CRS.

Hi.
I worked in a previous career phase with photogrammetry and GIS.
Precise knowledge of the coordinate system is often critical in these
domains. I appreciate the concern about the opacity of the WKT or

amount to yet
Dear all
I agree that we should not reinvent in CF what has already been thought out
elsewhere if we can help it. This point is often made in the development of
CF. However I think we should restrict our attention to what is really needed
in CF i.e. for which there are already use-cases. In my

ArcGIS already reads and writes netCDF but doesn't pay any attention to
the CF projection information as it stands.
Untrue, actually; as of v.9.3+, you can directly import CF-compliant NetCDF
as a raster using the Multidimension Tools. The map projection metadata
has to follow CF
