It is large enough to have great variety but isn't overwhelming. It has a broad focus without being diluted. And, It has a wealth of information while still being accessible to people of all skill levels. The people you get to meet and interact with are great and the camaraderie of the Coldfusion community is evident. I love how the sessions are given by people in the industry who are approachable and willing to further discuss what they're teaching. I've been using Coldfusion since version 1.5 but I always learn something new at CFUNITED. The things I've learned at each CFUNITED have been put into practice building sites for clients of all types and across many industries. Each year I've attended CFUNITED I can't wait to sign up for the next year to make sure I don't miss out on the valuable information and networking opportunities." - Chris Rockett, La Plata MD -------------- * Hotel accommodations discount rate for Frameworks Conference has a cut off date of January 9th, 2007. Hope to hear from you! -------------- Michael Smith: This time we are talking with Michael Smith about his CFUNITED-06 talk "Mindmaps for better programming". So why should a developer see your session Michael? Michael Smith: If you want to write better code faster then mindmaps can help. MS: What exactly is a mindmap? MS: A mindmap is a web of ideas - with the more important idea or question in the middle and each sub-idea radiating out from there. Like the branches and twigs on a tree. The further from the center the less important the idea is to the central concept. MS: Sounds complex! Do you have an example? MS: It would be best to show you an example (and I will do at the session) but for now imagine a company org chart. It starts with the CEO at the top then linked from him or her are all the VPs, then under them the Directors and finally the line workers. It is a hierarchy. It would also be possible to draw the org chart starting with the CEO in the center and the VPs radiating out in a circle around them, with the next level expanding out in all directions from that. That is how many mindmaps are drawn MS: Why is that? MS: Because you get more room on the paper for new ideas! It also makes it easier to draw in connections between ideas on different sides of the mindmap... And finding new connections is one on the benefits of mindmapping. Often I will see new ideas or ways of understanding a problem that just wouldn't have occurred with a traditional linear approach. MS: Cool, so what do you use mindmapping for in programming? MS: For initial requirements gathering - to jot down quickly what the client needs and any issues that need to be resolved. Also during project management it can keep track of tasks and dependencies. During development it is a great way to brainstorm about a problem and to come up with different solutions - especially in a team environment because everyone can share and see their ideas all at once instead of having to remember them. MS: What about Fusebox? I have heard of mindmapping tools there... MS: Yes mindmapping is a good way to architect a Fusebox application - to decide what fuseactions belong in which circuits and what code can be reused. If you are using one of the mindmapping tools such as MindMapper then it is very easy to move pieces of the architecture around between circuits and maintain he sub- hierarchy of fuses below them. There are also tools by Jeff Peters that will take the mindmap and automatically create Fusebox code from it or do the opposite - take an finished Fusebox application and produce the mindmap of its architecture. I will demo MindMapper during my talk. It really makes it easy to mindmap. MS: Is it expensive? MS: No there is a version under $50. But if that is too much there are open source mindmapping tools that I will tell people about and of course the original mind mapping tool is both free and already deployed in 100% of companies. MS: What is that? MS: Paper and pen! In fact during my session I will teach how to mindmap and everyone will create a mindmap on paper to take home with them. I have also included six sample mindmaps in my code samples both as MindMapper files and as PDFs that you can study at home. MS: Great! I will be certain to be at your session!
