[cfaussie] CFSocket

2011-09-21 Thread raiola
Hi,

I am looking to develop an app that received data from mobile devices, said
data is sent to the server and I am looking to use CFsocket to listen /
capture data to then have data recorded into the sql table

Never having worked with CFSocket before I am wondering if anyone can advise
on the capacity of the listener, in that if the server is sent data from
several hundred mobile devices at the same time, given there may be up to
5,000 devices out in the field (each set of data is simple a string of up to
100 characters) will the cfsocket be able to handle such volumes.

The capturing of the data is essential as the application will then process
said data and send alerts where appropriate to third parties

Regards

Claude Raiola (B.Econ Acc; B.Hot. Mngt)

Re: [cfaussie] CFSocket

2011-09-21 Thread Kai Koenig
I assume you're talking about the CF Event Gateways using the socket gateway?

As with any request/response-based model you need to plan and loadtest your
solution. Not sure how often your devices send data, but I'd be surprised if
you'd get data from several hundred devices at exactly the same time.

In CF Admin you can control how many threads you'd like to assign to the CF
Event Gateway system. Looking at your use case that'd probably be a server
that's not doing much else but serving this application, so set it accordingly.
The Event Gateway system has a queue (similar to a request queue for HTTP
requests on port 80) that will be processed step by step. If you find yourself
running out of capacity you might need to cluster - but just testing will show
you that.

Another option woul dbe to use a full-blow Message Queue like RabbitMQ as
endpoint and feed into CF from there.

Cheers
Kai
