Re: [cfaussie] Best JVM version to use with CF9

2011-11-23 Thread Kai Koenig
It depends.

.24 is as people have said - the latest, officially supported version.

People have reported running it successfully with later releases - I'd
personally do that if there's a particular bug fix or improvement you want to
take advantage of.

Cheers
Kai

RE: [cfaussie] Best JVM version to use with CF9

2011-11-16 Thread charlie arehart
I'm not aware of any particularly impressive performance increases, no, at
least not for those on CF 9. Of course, those on CF 8 or 8.01, who were
still running 1.6.0_04 or earlier by default WILL see a performance increase
by getting past the bug fixed in _10 (discussed in the blog entry), but the
JVM in CF 9 and 9.01 is past that. So to your original question (the best
JVM to use with CF), I was just focusing on the benefits of that authorized
update to _24, for all the improvements it may offer (security,
functionality, etc.) now that it was specifically supported by CF.

That said, if anyone would wonder, I'd say that it's rare (in my experience
as an independent CF troubleshooting consultant) that changing the JVM
itself has ever been a vital solution to solving CF performance problems
(except in that case of getting CF 8/8.01 past update 1.6.0_10).

On the other hand, if one is facing performance challenges (and if that may
have been why you were considering it Steve), there are many other usual
suspects which are more likely. I'll pick this up in a follow-up note.

RE: [cfaussie] Best JVM version to use with CF9

2011-11-16 Thread charlie arehart
So following up my note below, I was talking about how changing the JVM is
rarely the key solution to solving CF performance problems (except that one
instance of the JVM bug prior to 1.6.0_10). I was saying that there are many
other more usual suspects. And really, they are hardly ever about code.

Instead, it's nearly always configuration (whether of CF or something it
connects to, like the web server or database server), and/or that config may
be challenged due to unexpected traffic (load or nature) that has not been
contemplated. The key is to know what's really going on inside CF.

And for that I always help my clients focus on using key diagnostics,
whether built into CF by default (and more than most realize) or easily
added for free. This can be logs, command line tools, monitors, emails
generated by them, and more. Once you can find and use them, you can
generally (perhaps with help at first) connect the dots to solving the
problem. Again, it rarely ends up being about changing code, but instead
configuration. Or just about better understanding how CF runs, and when and
why requests take a long time, what they are waiting for, what they want to
talk to, what may be generating more requests than you expect, what's
creating more sessions than you expect, and so on.

And some may notice I have not mentioned tweaking the JVM or GC
algorithms, as is often proposed (and passed around, almost like trading
cards). I know that some people (on this very list) will be able to offer
some specific case where that was indeed THE one change that fixed things
for them. But in my now hundreds of engagements to help solve problems, it's
been the solution in maybe one or two.

Honestly, I find that many recommendations to do that (or that focus on code
tweaks to try, etc.) seem to come often from a stance of not having taken
full advantage of available diagnostics, so that CF has felt like a black
box and people are just willing to try what they can, until something
works. And if CF's running poorly, just restart it. Those sort of
solutions are so common in our circles as to rarely be challenged.

I'm just stressing that a better approach is to find the right diagnostics,
study them, connect them with others, identify the real problem, fix it, and
repeat the process until the major (or perhaps a few key) problems are
resolved.

I realize that my pushing this point will make me seem a tall poppy to some
(somehow I can't fail to raise that feeling in certain people, whenever I
write). I just want to encourage people to look outside the box when
facing challenges. Or more specifically, to look INSIDE the box more
effectively.

I plan to create some more targeted resources focused specifically on better
CF server troubleshooting. Until then, besides my assisting people via
consulting, I also do it via lists, my blog, presos, and articles. More at
www.carehart.org.

Back to your note, Steve, I realize that you may not have been missing or
misunderstanding any of this yourself. You simply asked about possible
performance increases from a JVM switch. :-) I just wanted to use it as
chance to offer this additional encouragement (and perhaps different
perspective for some readers), in case it may be helpful. (Off to bed for me
now, so no replies until the morning, if needed.)

And to those attending CF.Objective(ANZ), have a great time. (About 14 folks
attended the daylong pre-conference class I did on this very topic last
year. If you're hear and want to chime in on whether this approach has
worked, please do.)

Subject: RE: [cfaussie] Best JVM version to use with CF9
