Re: [change] [TIER] Qualitative research tools

2013-02-22 Thread Fritz Meissner
I've done a small amount of interview recording.

Most recently the Android app Smart Voice Recorder did a really good
job of picking up conversation at a table in a crowded and loud
restaurant. That's on a Samsung Galaxy S running Android 4.2.

I had abysmal results with the voice recorder app that came standard
with the phone two years ago (probably Android 2.3 then?).

To transcribe I just played the audio back in Windows Media player -
after my first experience transcribing a few years ago (a huge pain) I
decided just to keep the audio files and only transcribe the portions
of an interview that I'll use as quotes. Of course I make notes that I
can use to understand the gist of the conversation and avoid taking
things out of context.

Regards,
Fritz

 Hi everyone,

We are doing some work on qualitative research tools and would very much
appreciate if you could take 1 min to answer the following questions:

 (1) Have you ever voice recorded interviews with participants?

 (2) If so, what tools did you use to do the recording?

 (3) What tools did you use to playback/decode the audio?

Please include hardware (like phones, tape recorders) and any software
 packages.

 Thanks very much!

[change] RFA for CommCare in French West Africa

2013-02-22 Thread neal lesh
Hi everybody,

Dimagi is offering support for organizations that want to test CommCare in
French West Africa. We're seeing a lot of excitement and innovation with a
similar Proof of Concept package we are offering India now, with over 20
new CommCare programs being launched over the next six months. Please
forward this to any organization in French West Africa that you think might
be interested (you can see the French version at the bottom).

thanks!

Dimagi is releasing a *Request for Applications to help organizations get
started using phone-based tools for frontline workers in Francophone West
Africa*. We are seeking organizations implementing scalable initiatives in
community health and other social sectors that could benefit from mobile
phone-based case management and data collection.

This RFA will support the use of the *open-source mobile software platform
CommCare. *CommCare is being deployed in 30 countries and used by thousands
of community health workers to track and support their clients with
registration forms, checklists, SMS reminders, and multimedia. Mounting
evidence indicates that this leads to improved frontline worker
performance, better reporting, and better patient care and education. Check
out our website (http://www.commcarehq.org/)* *to view online videos, read
papers on the effectiveness of CommCare, and learn about how any
organization can design its own mHealth application using our online
application-building tools.

Awardees will each receive *10 free phones installed *with a CommCare
application designed for their* *frontline workers*, *free access to
the *CommCareHQ
cloud-based server for one year, *and* one month of free support* from
Dimagi’s experienced French-speaking Field Managers including a *2 week
field* visit to help launch CommCare with their frontline workers.

For further information and to download the full RFA, please refer to our
