Playground project defied our divisions

The Sun's article "All work makes for play" (April 16) did a great job of helping readers to understand the facts of the playground build and spreading the word about the need for support and recognition to the leadership of the Community Built Playground, Inc. project. Unfortunately, the piece did not accurately capture the full story of the mission and impact of "Our Playground at Stadium Place."

The 5,000-plus volunteers on this nine-day project included seniors, adults and young people from a myriad of backgrounds who, had it not been for this project, would never have met and had the opportunity to work toward a common goal with someone different from themselves.

Our community is now better for all of this.

Unfortunately, the images selected by The Sun to portray this event did not represent the rare and brilliant diversity this effort drew.

In a region that on so many levels remains segregated and fractured, it would have been nice if The Sun had taken the time and care to provide its readers with a glimpse of the real miracle on 33rd Street.

Mary L. Washington
