Re: [Chat] trash cans

2011-04-01 Thread jberlin

 Mr Hill,

I understand that no tax money is being used. The CVCBD is not a
municipality. Since many municipalities are incompetent,I hope the CVCBD
is not using them as an example of what to do.

This is extravagance out of control.
I am sure Witt Industries is reputable. They have been in business a
long time, probably due to frivolous purchases.

I cannot conceive of any rationale that would justify this waste of money.

Sincerely,
Judy Berlin

The trash cans we are purchasing are made by Witt Industries a reputable
American company in Ohio that has been in business for over 100 years. The
particular cans we are purchasing are the Stadium Series described here:
http://www.witt.com/Stadium-Series/2009/03/message-center.php As quality
trash cans go, these are actually on the less expensive side at $600. Many
municipalities spend far more as you can see from browsing this website and
others. The trashcans you see in parks for example typically cost well over
a $1000 each.

I have attached the two page proposal I gave to the Board several months ago
when I first put forward this idea and also a picture that compares the old
and new cans; the new can was on loan from Stevenson University. I think my
proposal pretty much explains the rationale.

The first shipment of 15 cans will arrive in mid April hopefully just in
time for the Mayor's Spring Cleanup. I am meeting with the Mayor's staff
today to arrange for her to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony at
about 9:30 Saturday April 16th in the park at Calvert Street and 24th. I
will keep everyone informed as to whether this event is ON or OFF. I
hope you will join us if it is.

Feel free to circulate.

   Dear Mr Hill,

As a homeowner and taxpayer, I find it insulting to spend that kind of
money for trash cans. Rats were a problem before the mesh cans were put
out. Why were they used. How much money was wasted on that ? I have to
agree with Tweefie Millspaugh, sounds to much like a $700/toilet or the
$900/hammer.

2011-04-01 Thread weinsteinm

Judy, if you're going to lecture everyone that they should buy American, you
can't then start complaining that it's too expensive to do so unless you can
demonstrate that it's possible to find equally high quality trash cans for
less. I'm sure it's possible to find ones made in Asia for a fraction of the
price (www.nytimes.com/2007/11/26/nyregion/26manhole.html tells the story of
how New York City began buying manhole covers made in India because they were
so much cheaper), but you would be against that, right? I'm sure it's also
possible to find lower quality ones that won't last as long, but then you're
pushing the CVCBD to be penny-wise and pound-foolish because they'd probably
end up paying more in the long run. Can you show that similar institutions are
able to purchase American-made, high-quality trash cans for less? If not, then
I don't understand why you're complaining.

Re: [Chat] trash cans

2011-04-01 Thread gasp107

Thank you Matthew!

Although $600.00 is expensive--if CV bought $50.00 cans, they would be stiolen
or blown away every week -- realizing that they are on the streets 24 / 7. At
$50.00 each per week, it would be $2600 for one location per year -- or if one
disappeared per month, it would be $600.00 per year. You do the math -- and
thank you for buying USA. I don't know about everyone else, but I do not want
to see beat up trash cans blowing around Charles Village. I am not an eliteist,
but I do appreciate a vibrant-clean neighborhood.

Do you remember the free cans that the City gave away 3 years ago--as we can
see, they have all disappeared.

As I see the examples on the web page, there are opportunities for signage on
the cans to either promote the neighborhood or to sell advertising to local
companies.

Thank You:
Richard Burnham

(a Local USA Printer)
