On a hunch from a previous experience with that warning light, I took it to Jiffy Lube to check to see if the oil needed changing. They showed me a Jiffy Lube oil filter still in use in my car from three months before that, meaning Brentwood Auto never changed my oil, but they were sure to charge me for it. Re: [Chat] Brentwood Auto
i have been going to brentwood for close to 30 years. i'v noticed a decline since the brother in law came on board. many good mechanics left as a result. there was a mechanic named mike who left. he was the best of the best. he opened a shop in towson/timonium area. i have an appt with brentwood monday, to have maintenance work done and 'timing belt' change. since my car used to be eddie's, i tell myself everything will be ok. maybe since i'v been with brentwood so loong, no problems (except for conflict with the bro in law), have occurred. does anyone know anything about ' DJ's', down the street from brentwwod? they were voted best of the best, one year, with the city paper. judy - Original Message - From: Don Homberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: The Charles Village Chat List Chat@charlesvillage.info Sent: Friday, February 04, 2005 5:50 AM Subject: [Chat] Brentwood Auto I too went to Brentwood on the recommendation of a friend. Each time I was charged for additional parts and service. Neither time did it improve to even close to what it had been prior to their original repair. I took the car to another shop described the symptoms and the first thing they asked was if the timing belts had been changed. Please propagate this message to everyone you think might be interestedTo Friends of the Baltimore International Rhythm FestivalThere is a real possibility that there will be no Rhythm Festival this year. Several things have contributed to this state of affairs. First, BIRDS' financial resources are the lowest they have been in nearly a decade, too low for us to feel comfortable proceeding with our usual festival design. In addition, my life has changed and I am not available to play a major role in the organization anymore. Lastly, it is time to start planning for this year's festival and for the first time in ten years there is no team in place to tackle the job. It is possible to design a festival with the meager resources we have available but a good sized crew with the heart to do it will have to materialize and commit themselves to the task with in a month or so to have a reasonable shot at doing it. We need volunteers to help with publicity and marketing, permits, a vendor and volunteer coodrinator, a program director and a festival director to work with me to help pull it all together. (About ten people are needed)So here's my plea. If you love the rhythm festival and want it to continue; if you're a task orientated person who is comfortable with responsibility and enjoys working collaboratively, an opportunity exist right now to make a difference. The BULBS are being offered WITHOUT CHARGE to all homes in the Charles Village Community. We will even install the BULBS for you! This is a great way to keep our neighborhood safer and friendlier and the price is right! The only way it could be better is if you also got cash to take them! Forget that! The CFL Bulbs use one-fourth of the energy of a standard incandescent BULB of the same wattage. That means you can light it twice as long and still use only half as much electricity as a regular incandescent light BULB. You will also find yourself climbing the ladder much less often to replace your porch BULB. These BULBS generally last up to thirteen time longer than an equivalent incandescent light BULBS! By saving you both money and ladder time, we hope this BULB will encourage you to KEEP YOUR PORCH LIGHTS ON AT NIGHT! By just flicking on your light switch at night, you can help keep Charles Village safer. The better lighted our neighborhood streets are the fewer shadowy places for the forces of darkness to hide. We do it all! The only thing we can't do is come over every night and turn them on for you! The only things you have to do are sign up for your BULBS, and then TURN THEM ON AFTER DARK. It's that simple! If you'd like to be more involved in this project, we could sure use you as a volunteer to distribute BULBS. We would appreciate it very, very much if you would spread the world to neighbors on your block who haven't gotten the word about this program yet. Perhaps you could organize your entire block, or part of your block, or perhaps a group of your immediate neighbors. Then call us with your list of those who would like the FREE BULBS. Title: Message couldn't believe this when i saw it. judy - Original Message - -Original Message-Subject: Wisconsin Considers Legalizing Cat Hunting AP A woman in Madison, Wis., shows her opposition to reclassifying feral cats as small game animals. Talk About It: Chat MADISON, Wis. (April 12) - Feline lovers holding pictures of cats, clutching stuffed animals and wearing whiskers faced-off against hundreds of hunters at meetings around Wisconsin to voice their opinion on whether to legalize cat hunting. Residents in 72 counties were asked whether free-roaming cats - including any domestic cat that isn't under the owner's direct control or any cat without a collar - should be listed as an unprotected species. If listed as so, the cats could be hunted. The proposal was one of several dozen included in a spring vote on hunting and fishing issues held by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. The results, only advisory, get forwarded to the state Natural Resources Board. Statewide results were expected Tuesday. La Crosse firefighter Mark Smith, 48, helped spearhead the cat-hunting proposal. He wants Wisconsin to declare free-roaming wild cats an unprotected species, just like skunks or gophers. Anyone with a small-game license could shoot the cats at will. At least two other upper Midwestern states, South Dakota and Minnesota, allow wild cats to be shot - and have for decades. Minnesota defines a wild, or feral, cat as one with no collar that does not show friendly behavior, said Kevin Kyle with that state's Department of Natural Resources. Every year in Wisconsin alone, an estimated 2 million wild cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds, according to state officials. Despite the astounding numbers, Smith's plan has been met with fierce opposition from cat lovers. Critics of Smith's idea organized Wisconsin Cat-Action Team and developed a Web site - dontshootthecat.com. Some argue it is better to trap wild cats, spay or neuter them, before releasing them. In Madison, about 1,200 people attended the Monday evening meeting at the Alliant Center - more than the 250 or so in a typical year, but less than the 3,000 or so who took part in a debate in 2000 over whether to allow hunters to shoot mourning doves. One of the attendees was Katy Francis, who wore cat ears, whiskers, a cat nose and a sign that read, ''Too Cute to Kill.'' For Francis, ''The cat hunting thing brought me out because it was very extreme.'' The 11th annual BIRDS Rhythm Gathering will be held on October 1, 2005, at St. Johns Church. It will start at 2:00pm with a drum circle jam outside of the church, and go through midnight. Part of the philosophy of a gathering rather than a festival is more of an intimate feel, and also a true gathering of the Baltimore area community of drummers to participate in the festival themselvesnot just attend. During the day, we have a Dunun drum workshop with Urban Foli, Jaqui is back with Drum for Joy!, Zaipo will be rocking the house with his African dance workshop, Ken Krampton will be working with the children for a kids workshop, and more. Workshop prices will be available soon. All day long there will be marketplace vendors (drums for sale!), a Kids Corner sponsored by Port Discovery, beverages and food from Yabba Pot. hi all, I'm a bit confused. happens sometimes. I remember being at community meetings where there was big opposition to the expansion of parole probation. one of the reasons given, if not the biggest reason given, was that there are to to many non profits in the area. made sense. after all non profits do not pay property taxes. I was reading the benefit district news letter, or whatever it is called. I noticed an area which was welcoming new residents/businesses to the neighborhood. a couple of the new neighbors were NON PROFITS. I don't recall any meetings to oppose these new non profits to the area because there were to many non profits. can any one out there shed some light on this for me? thanks in advance Judy ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info

What about the efforts that are being put into Waverly Main Street and revitalization of houses around Greenmount? And what about the kids themselves? Lower Greenmount is not a safe place and certainly would not provide youth with role models. I find this another attempt by the city to move such a facility to the cheapest land it can fine. A far better place would be in a quiet, wooded area where there could be an actual "campus" that would provide offenders with a more positive experience and even a safe, attractive place to hang out. A far better place would be in a quiet, wooded area where there could be an actual campus that would provide offenders with a more positive experience and even a safe, attractive place to hang out. Roland Park, for instance, up by the private schools. -Original Message- From: Brad Schlegel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Dec 8, 2005 11:34 AM To: Yahoo - BMOG Coalition [EMAIL PROTECTED] CVDiscussion [EMAIL PROTECTED], CVChat Chat@charlesvillage.info Subject: [Chat] Fw: [I-NEIGHBORS] VISIT Druid Park Lake Drive Juvenile Center This message was sent by one of your neighbors using I-Neighbors.org. - Dear Communities, There is a proposal on the table for the Dept. of Juvenile Services to open a Baltimore City Day and Evening Reporting Center at 2920 Greenmount Ave. Ms. Zarva Taru, from the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center, presented the idea at the Waverly Improvement Association Meeting on Tuesday, December 6th. They stated that they have been in contact or will be in contact with the community associations of Better Waverly, Harwood and Abell. There will be many more meetings and public forums about this plan for everyone to participate in. Ms. Zarva Taru invited a small amount of community members to view the current facility at Druid Park Lake Drive. Those who have been able to visit the center said that it was the best way for them to understand what they are trying to develop on Greenmount Ave. I have arranged to take 6 community members to visit the facility on Friday, December 16th at 7pm. Again, the facility is small so she can only accommodate a small group at a time without disrupting the program. Please send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call 410-262-3510 if you'd like to visit. The officer didn't appear, and the case was dismissed! I was ready to argue that I didn't deserve the ticket. I had a letter signed by Dave Barnett, and Steve was there ready to testify as a witness. But it wasn't necessary. I do want to offer thanks to Steve and Dave for their help. I also want to thank Dana Moore for offering me advice about how to present the case and suggesting some Do's and Don'ts. This all was such a waste of energy brought on by probably nothing more than a police officer in a bad mood. While I may have technically violated the law, I think it was inappropriate for the police officer to give me a ticket for causing a very minor inconvenience. The demeanor of the officers was inappropriate. The officer who issued the ticket spoke to Steve in a very aggressive tone, ordering him to move back and threatening him with arrest when he did nothing threatening. I had to ask four times if I was free to go after they gave me the ticket. Should I write a letter to somebody to complain about the treatment? What do Chat List subscribers think? --Emil - Forwarded message from Emil Volcheck [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Date: Wed, 12 Oct 2005 00:28:31 -0400 From: Emil Volcheck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: chat@charlesvillage.info Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Ticketed for talking! Mail-Followup-To: chat@charlesvillage.info, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Hello, neighbors, After the CVCBDMA Board meeting, I drove back and gave Steve Gewirtz a lift. Steve and I both live on the 3000 block of Guilford, and I stopped across from his house, right before the intersection of Guilford and 30th. We chatted for a little while about politics, then Dave Barnett drove by in the opposite direction, on his way home I assume. I hadn't seen him for a while, so we both rolled down our windows to talk. Then I saw a police car pull up behind me, with bubble lights. Dave moved on, and I pulled my car closer to the side to get out of the way. The police gave me a $50 ticket for impeding the flow of traffic. I was really surprised because I was in the car the whole time, with the hazard lights on, and I moved almost as soon as I saw someone behind me was trying to get by. Certainly when Dave moved, I believe the police could have gotten past me. The police starting ticketing me right after I turned the corner and I let Steve off. Steve asked the officer what the problem was, and they told him to back off, gave him a 5-second warning. That seemed a little harsh. I think I remember hearing recently that Dana Moore was given a ticket when she was stopped out in front of her house loading or unloading from her car, and that the judge threw it out. I'm planning to tell the judge I'm innocent, and Steve says he'll come with me. Does anybody have any thoughts about this situation? It seems kind of extreme. I feel like I should have been entitled to some signal like a honk or yelling move along before they decided I was blocking traffic. --Emil -- Emil Volcheck [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://acm.org/~volcheck - End forwarded message - -- Emil Volcheck [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://acm.org/~volcheck ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info

I have lived in this community longer than the one in which I was raised. My daughter is 26. I was here before she came into my life. So let's say about 28 years. I've seen many changes to this community, not all good. I've seen good friends leave. I've lost good friends through death. I.v seen people Idid not have good feelings forleave, good riddance. When my father died, in 1995, I cried on many a shoulder around here. Got many hugs from friends ar'd here. When my mother died on Jan 31 St.. I got nothing from this community. If it weren't for Tweefy, (who sent an FYI to the list) Connie and Chase(my daughter's father), who attended the funeral, and words of comfort from Brad (outside of the community, via emailwith cc to the chat list), Commie Nico (that's OK with me. My father was a communist. He could talk the skin off a snake.), Matthew (part time community person), and Arjay, who I emailed. I sent a thank you for being nice to my mom to the Abell list and it was in the AIA newsletter.I did not receive anything whether by phone., email, card or note stuck in my door. from this community. Not even any anonymous cards. Like I said I've seen to many changes in this community and theyARE NOTall Good. Then the best films of the festival go on tour. This year's tour includes movies from three to 50 minutes about skiing, mountain climbing, cliff climbing, paragliding, whitewater kayaking, base jumping, biking, and others. Re: [Chat] Nectar of the gods
when r u having a 'nectar of the gods' tasting party? Judy On 07/24/2013 09:17 AM, Stephen J Gewirtz wrote: Recently, I read /Cooked /by Michael Pollan. In that book, Pollan talks about four methods of cooking: fire (grilling), water (braising), air (baking) and earth (fermenting). It was the last method that was something new to me, and I decided to try it. The first thing I tried was making kim chi (Korean fermented cabbage). That is still in progress. I tasted it after a week, and it still needs more time, but I liked it and my wife did not. BTW, kim chi makes quite an odor for the first two or three days of fermentation. The next thing I tried was mead, the nectar of the gods. Mead is an alcoholic drink obtained by mixing raw honey with water and letting it ferment. My first try used some honey that had crystallized, and I mixed it with water and let it sit for a week getting yeast out of the air. Then, I corked the bottle it was in. It did ferment, and it has a kick to it (the alcohol). But I prefer what I got next. My second attempt, which is much tastier, was to take raw honey that had not crystallized (available from Woolsey Farm at the farmers' market) and to mix it with water and a tiny amount of instant yeast. Specifically, I took a pound of honey and mixed it with enough filtered water (you can also let the water sit overnight -- you need to get rid of the chlorine) to make almost two quarts total, plus 1/8 teaspoon of instant yeast (the same as I use when baking bread -- I would guess that other yeast would also work). I let it sit in the bottle uncapped for about 3 days, then capped the bottle, opening the bottle twice a day to release the pressure building up from the carbon dioxide developed by the yeast and the sugar in the honey. After two or three more days (taste it), I had a superb tasting drink which gave me a bit of a buzz. Now, the bottle is in the refrigerator. The bottle I used is a stainless steel growler, i.e. a reusable bottle made to be filled and refilled with beer from a microbrewery. I believe that it has just become legal in Maryland for some establishments that sell beer to fill growlers, but I have not tried getting a growler filled. The growlers I got came from Williams Sonoma. I have not yet tried it, but you can also add blueberries or other fruit to the mead to give it more flavor as it ferments. Re: [Chat] send me some news for Village Chat
I will be losing my great neighbours Bill and Jennifer Delkanic, from Barclay street. They are moving up in the world. When it snowed, my side walk was shovelled before I woke up. Their smiles could light up the night sky. To say I will miss them is an understatement. Barclay street won't be the same without them. this has happened before. i don't show nobody nothin. judy On 08/20/2013 10:36 PM, Stephen J Gewirtz wrote: People have gone door to door asking to see BGE bills. They claim that they can offer electricity and/or gas for less than BGE, and they ask to see a BGE bill so that they can tell you how much they can save you. But according to a recent report on Channel 11, what at least some of them are doing is getting an account number from a BGE bill in order to put through a change of supplier even if you tell then that you do not want to switch. Moreover, BGE may charge you to switch back. In the last two days, two people have come to my door asking to see my BGE bill. My wife and I have told them that we are not interested and have not gotten out our bill. I recommend that others do the same. Some people may save money by switching suppliers, but if you are interested in doing so (and I have not bothered), you should be able to find the information online. Also, alternate suppliers send out enough ads in the mail. What I notice in the ads that come in the mail is that to lock in a lower rate, I would have to agree to a one or two year contract. That includes the offers from Constellation Energy (BGE's parent company) that claim to lock in a lower rate. I have no idea whether switching actually will save money over the length of the contract. BTW, I have a security door that I do not open when I speak to someone going door to door. That door is locked, and I cannot open it unless I get the key out. A key is kept near the door but out of sight for fire safety in case anyone ever has to get out of the house, and another key is in my pocket, but I will not open the door for anyone I do not know. I got the door a number of years ago, and it has been a very worthwhile investment. If you do not have a security door, be extremely wary of opening your door for anyone you do not know.
