corridor along East 61st Street as a residential area Wednesday, even after a 
busload of critics from the South Side voiced their fears about gentrification."

Why rezone the 9-block stretch as residential instead of commercial area? The 
Alderman Arenda Troutman (20th) says it isn't to open the way for residential 
development, but rather so she can control what businesses open.  But potential 
condo development certainly concerns the 50 residents who went to protest at 
the city council meeting. 

Any thoughts on this rezoning issue?  How can the Ald. and city economically 
revitalize an area without encouraging expensive housing development and 
pushing out residents as cost of living rises?  The big double-edged sword of 
gentrification emerges in yet another Chicago neighborhood...
