5/20/04 "A City Council committee recommended rezoning a nine-block-long business corridor along East 61st Street as a residential area Wednesday, even after a busload of critics from the South Side voiced their fears about gentrification."
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chicago/chi- 0405200350may20,1,7313512.story (if the link doesn't work, search "rezoning South Side") Why rezone the 9-block stretch as residential instead of commercial area? The Alderman Arenda Troutman (20th) says it isn't to open the way for residential development, but rather so she can control what businesses open. But potential condo development certainly concerns the 50 residents who went to protest at the city council meeting. Any thoughts on this rezoning issue? How can the Ald. and city economically revitalize an area without encouraging expensive housing development and pushing out residents as cost of living rises? The big double-edged sword of gentrification emerges in yet another Chicago neighborhood...
