*****MEDIA ALERT***** Parents, Community Members, and Local School Councils to Demand Answers from Mayor Daley
Press conference Thursday, July 1 at 10 am Mayor’s Office, City Hall, 5th floor. Parents, community groups and Local School Councils will come together to protest the recent Chicago Public Schools school closings and raise questions about the Renaissance 2010 plan for new school development. Last Thursday, CPS and business leaders announced an even dramatic plan to convert 100 schools in low income communities to charter schools, contract schools or small schools. Both the recent school closings and the Renaissance 2010 proposal were crafted without valid community input. Local school supporters are joining together to press for high quality education and demand real LSC, parent and community participation in CPS decision-making. The group will also press for closer scrutiny and monitoring of current CPS new school initiatives before expanding these programs. Participating organizations include Casa Aztlan, Chicago School Leadership Cooperative, Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, Coalition for Improved Education in South Shore, Designs for Change, Grand Boulevard Federation, Hunger Strikers Council of Little Village, Institute for Positive Living, Kenwood Oakland Community Organization, Kenwood-Oakland LSC Federation, Neighborhood Capital Budget Group, North Lawndale LSC Federation, Padres Unidos de Pilsen Parents United for Responsible, South Austin Coalition for Community Control, Sojourner Truth LSC West Side Education Committee, and West Town Leadership United.
