As I remember:

Felix had (has?) a character figurine of the bad penguin from The  
Wrong Trousers, a Wallace  Gromit adventure. He saw this when  
searching a name for his new Scheme compiler. From a bird to Chicken  
is his internal logic.

It used to be part of the Frequently Asked Questions in the manual:

I don't know why this FAQ item was removed for the Chicken 4 manual.

 hmmm... Chickens are oviparous? :)

At one point in Chicken 3 you could actually upgrade the Chicken core
by typing chicken-setup chicken, so Chicken actually was an egg.
