I've seen that Magicyuv is not open source, but it's free for 8 bits.

Lagarith (lossless) seems to be the highest quality but also very slow
in single threads:

No, ffmpeg does not support Turing. So should one create a patch to
include it? It's beyond my capabilities.

In \todo I put two figures in which I copied your TikZ code to show
writings and arrows, but the arrows are not displayed. I added the
\caption package at Olaf's suggestion. Let me know if it's okay.
I've also put in the latest changes made by Phyllis.
D Quinton's e-mails are full of interesting suggestions. Maybe it's
better to put them on Mantis BT so as not to lose track of them?
