The Fink team make many custom modifcations to makefiles and even software source before adding things to their distribution packages. They are much more than just a neat organisation of software. There is much work that goes on behind the scenes to fix many of the issues that OSX has with

I haven't tried 10.4 yet, but Fink claims they have 0.84 working in their source-based distibutions for 10.4 http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/search.php?summary=clam Fink puts everything in a /sw directory, so it shouldn't interfere with anything you've already installed elsewhere. -Dan Uwe
