Hi Colin,
Thanks for the suggestion.
I gave ownership of the .cache directory to Root and this has resolved
the issue so far.
I had some earlier success with removing all Firefox extensions, but
this only worked for awhile.
In the end I completely removed firefox from the system and
Also look at "man freshclam.conf".
I don't see any facility to randomize the check times, as
freshclam-sleep provides. That's where a systemd timer would be nice, as
it provides a rich set of syntax for random sleeps.

Looks like a nudge to switch to the systemd service instead of a cron
listing. Try:
systemctl enable clamav-freshclam
I'm a little surprised that they didn't use a systemd timer.

the redhat 8 package is missing the following :

/usr/share/clamav/freshclam-sleep
is this a normal behavior ?
I think you should ask Red Hat. They don't exist in the official source.

No, but the debian package (*.deb), instead of building it myself
(like Yasuhiro did).
What I'm trying to say: The prebuilt package suffers from the same
issue :)

I'm seeing log entries like this for the machines with 1.0.0-rc
indicating the daily.cld update failed:
