What I'm not sure about is the structure needed for the android app to 
'read'.  Via rsync I can copy individual mp3 files to the 'external' sd 
card on the phone.  Clementine saves playlists as 
xspf files - if these are on the sd card would they make any sense to the 
phone's music player?  (I'm guessing not).   My ignorance is not so much 
how to copy indiviual files to the sd card but how to copy/preserve album 
names and playlists for say 300 mp3 files

if you plug your android into your computer & are able to navigate with a 
file browser to where the music is stored
Clementine will be able to manage those files through the devices tab on 
the left side

as a work around you can copy music to a tf card & install in your android 
device
