As always, we welcome feedback and would encourage anyone interested
to come join the Fedora Atomic WG[0] as we continue to iterate on
integrating the Project Atomic[4] family of technologies into Fedora.
Anyone interested in contributing Container Images, please feel free
to join in and submit one for Review[5][6].

[atomic-wg] Issue #279: talk/workshop proposals for Flock

2017-06-14 Thread Dusty Mabe

dustymabe added a new comment to an issue you are following:
``
Talk: Atomic Host 101
Time: 120 minutes
Presenter: Dusty Mabe
Description:

Heard about Atomic Host, but never had a chance to try it out? This
hands on lab will show you the ins and outs of Atomic Host. It will
attempt to dispell some myths and show you how Atomic Host can be
useful even for your traditional non-container workloads. Some of
the features covered will be:

- Atomic Upgrades/Rollbacks
- Browsing OS History
- Package Layering
- Live filesystem updates
- Configuring Storage for Containers
- Viewing Changes to your deployed files

At the beginning of this session I'll briefly present on what Atomic
Host is and then we'll dive right in. Please bring your laptops to the
session and be able to launch a VM on it. We'll send out an email the
week of with instructions on how to download the materials for the
lab.

``
Talk: Fedora Atomic - State of the Union
Time: 30 minutes
Presenter: Dusty Mabe
Description:

The Fedora Atomic Working group and the technology behind Fedora
Atomic host have come a long way in a year. Fedora Atomic is now one
of the three pillars of Fedora, we are testing and releasing updated
content every two weeks, and we have integrated much better with the
Fedora Project and the broader Fedora Community. Combine this along
with the fact that there have been a great deal of new features in
our underlying upstream projects, it truly makes the working group
an exciting place to be.

This talk will cover everything from what Project Atomic and Atomic
Host is to how the Fedora Atomic Working Group has developed and on
to what improvements we've been making for users and community
members. As always, there will definitely be pointers to how to get
involved :).

List of needed people for Flock sessions?

2017-06-14 Thread Josh Berkus
Bex,

You've said that you want to use the list of accepted proposals to
determine who needs to be at Flock this year (and thus who is funded).
However, the application form doesn't have a field for "list of needed
participants". Should we add everyone needed for a work session as
co-presenters? Or something else?

[atomic-wg] Issue #279: talk/workshop proposals for Flock

jberkus added a new comment to an issue you are following:
``
Fedora Atomic Doc Work

Fedora Atomic has all kinds of awesome first-in-the-industry capabilities, but
isn't getting the attention it deserves because a minority of our features are
documented. As of Flock, we have a brand-new, CI-and-container-driven
documentation system, and this work session will help populate it.

This session will include a brief introduction on setting up a local build &
test environment for Atomic documentation and the practical basics of our tools
and style sheets. We will then pick from a list of areas which urgently need
documentation and participants will work in teams to start documentation for
those sections.

This Do session follows up on the Atomic Doc VFAD from late July, in order to
get more Fedora community members helping with documentation. Attendees should
bring Fedora laptops with git and Minishift installed.

Discussing Kubernetes and Openshift Origin Deployment Options

by @jasonbrooks and @yzhang

When it comes to methods of deploying kubernetes and openshift origin clusters,
the Fedora community faces an embarrassment of riches: ansible scripts,
kubeadm, oc cluster up, minishift and minikube, among other options. In this
work session, we'll try to lay out the main options for setting up these
clusters, seek out discussion and feedback about which options are working best
for our community members, and develop some plans around better improving,
documenting, and promoting these options.

[atomic-wg] Issue #282: Atomic Host images omit many common locales that all other flavors include

2017-06-14 Thread Josh Berkus

jberkus added a new comment to an issue you are following:
``
@jlebon given that we're currently trying to *shrink* the base image, I'm not
keen on adding 137MB of storage if we can find another option. Currently the
CoreOS ISO is half the size of Fedora Atomic, and that's an issue which folks
bring up with me at container conferences, a lot.

I'd be up for an "all-locales" branch. I'd prefer a locales system container,
but I realize that's probably pie-in-the-sky right now.

``
So just ballparking here, but 137 MB on disk will probably translate to ~35 MB
additional space of the qcow2 (based on the same compression ratios I found in
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1186757). I think if we're
comfortable with that (I am :)), I'd vote for just shipping all the locales.

1) Why do locales need to be installed into the tree? Isn't this just
configuration?

2) Maybe we just need an all-locales option.

3) If Flatpak has a solution that works, can we emulate/copy it?

``
As far as dynamic locale installation: difficult but still doable. I think for
every treecompose we'd need to generate a new second ref like
`fedora/26/x86_64/locales/atomic-host`. And we'd need a new client side
command to install it, and logic to treat it like an overlay. We already have
overlay logic for RPM packages, but this wouldn't be an RPM. (Or well we
*could* make it into one but I'm not sure that fixes more problems than it
would create)
