The worst part is that the test is potentially destructive. If you turn the
ignition off and nothing happens, you know that you can do that. On the other
hand, if you do that and you fry the diodes, you know that you shouldn't, but
you also need to replace the alternator. And trying it on
Hi Dave,
It's possible your alternator is internally wired differently. As for the
rest of us (again, what I was told) the diodes are supposedly there meant
to both turn the a/c current into dc for use by the batteries and act
fuse-like to prevent the possibility some kind of much worse
My experience is the same as Jim's - no problem turning the key off with the
engine running.

Turning the key off should not damage anything if the wiring is correct.
Turning the battery switch off will probably damage the alternator.
I turn my key off all the time just before I shut down, to avoid that
annoying alarm.

The old rule of thumb is 3-6deg on the rudder angle. Whatever that translate
into for your wheel arrangement. Seems to work well for me and I fly a 160%.

Interesting discussion. So, I have run my 1985 2gm Yanmar briefly with
the key removed and no apparent harm was done. The manual does say never
to run it with the battery disconnected.
Now, when I check the schematic, (and my engine) there is a 30A tubular
fuse in series with the key switch.
Regarding in board tracks, don't have any. On my wish list.
How much weather helm is normal; example heading into the wind 15K with
150% and main back winding some - I have about 1/4 turn on the wheel and
perhaps more on the puffs.
