Battery monitors are kinda a voodoo type instrument, if you don't wave the 
chicken just right your reading is meaningless.  If / when I get the desire to 
put in a battery monitor I will go with a Balmar Smart Gauge, from what I've 
read it is a good product.  At $320 (Defender) it has not gotten to the top of 
the required upgrades list yet...

the same type of material used for the circuit breaker panel.  What works and 
looks like the original stuff?

If one is spending $108 US to monitor voltage-only on 2-banks, it really isn’t 
too far a leap to spend a bit more to add in current monitoring ... I haven’t 
used them but the Microlog DMM-3 with a shunt would run about $130 (US) or so. 
Even the Blue Seas 8248 is $210 with the shunt.

once, but it didn't match anything inside the boat.

I also used the Blue Seas three bank DVM. It’s been great, but quite a bit more 
expensive than the Sears DVM that that you found.

For the panel: the original material used by C was 1/8 inch black bakelite. I 
had a local sign maker fabricate a custom panel for me.
He used his CNC engraving machine and did a great professional job.
