The trip down the Welland Canal is about a 20-hour event (lots of waiting
around for commercial traffic to clear) and can be rough on your boat if you
get the wall. I’m guessing about four days from Erie with some stopping along
the way.

By the way, Bill, I plugged you in two days ago, and you were still plugged in
this morning.

Joe,

Just idle speculation but it's about 400 mi one way from New York Harbor to
Kingston via the Hudson River/Erie & Oswego Canals and crossing Lake Ontario,
so add the 300 mi or so one way from the Chesapeake to NYC you are talking over
a 1,200 mi round trip, but you don't have to go past Montreal. I've done trips
on the Hudson and Canals a few times (by powerboat), it's beautiful but kind of
slow with the locks and of course on a sailboat the 15' overhead limit requires
unstepping the mast before Albany.

So while I'd be interested in a Kingston rendezvous, I think car is my
preferred travel mode (not having the fly option)

No straight line between here and there in a sailboat unfortunately. To me
"early 2023" means January to March, which is probably not all that warm
anyplace in Canada and even here in "tropical" Maryland a fair number of
boats are not ready to use by March. (not me, not winterizing this year, I
missed too much good winter sailing last year now our climate has been set
to "Georgia winter")

Kingston is not that far North - only 44 degrees (so still in the southern
half of the northern hemisphere). Of course, it does not make it any closer.

Which "Kingston" are we talking about?

I live right near one of the "Kingston"s, but mine is in Ontario. I suspect
that';s not what you're talking about.

 Thanks Dennis,
Yes, lots of elements to put together to make this the successful event it is
destined to be. The primary question is who would organize it? I can coordinate
the Marine Museum's involvement, but we will also need someone or a group to
represent the C community. There used to be an annual C Regatta on Lake
Ontario, so I suspect there will be great local response to this event. Initial
response from the Kingston Yacht Club is positive, but a date will need to be
chosen that blends with Kingston's busy sailing schedule that includes CORK
specifically. Kingston also sits between the two popular Lake Ontaro cruising
grounds of the Bay of Quinte and the Thousand Islands, so boats attending this
rendezvous will have excellant options before and after. It would be great if
people could drive or fly to this event if they can't come by boat.
Lots to think about, but well worth doing.
