Re: Stus-List VHF Radio with Outside Extension Mic

2020-07-07 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
I will second Bill’s comment about ram mic vs handheld in cockpit. Aside from
wattage and battery charge life there can be other considerations as well.

In September 2014 we were racing in the Prince of Wales race is Halifax aboard
the C Koobalibra. Dave’s Ram mic had died so I brought my almost new
handheld aboard from Persistence.

It was windy and the mainsheet setup on the C can lead to entaglement with
the Binnacle if not careful during gybes. One gybe in 20 knot TWS resulted in
this and when we freed it the handheld VHF exploded all over the cockpit. We
recovered the VHS before it went out the transom but the battery was gone and
all the knobs and antenna were cleaned right off the top by the main sheet.

No one was hurt, Koobalibra suffered no damage and we finished the race with no
further incidents. Thankfully Perrsistence had won a Std Horizon HH VHF in a
race 2 years earlier so was not without one.

I could never go back to not having A RAM mic in the cockpit, a handheld is a
PIA.
Having said that, that is exactly the situation I find myself in now, and
just the thought of running the cable up to the cabin has me procrastinating.
Like Alan sez, there is a very good chance the existing cable will work with
newer mic, or the current cable they sell may work with your older one. There
are several on Ebay.
Also, if you get another, S-H just came out with a new radio, GX2400, which I
just missed getting by a day.

I like my ICOM radio with DSC and RAM mic. I think some of the newer ones have
builtin AIS.

When my cable went bad, I called ICOM, and they said they no longer stock the
cable. Then I asked whether a later mic cable would work. It turned out that it
did, and I was able to repair the mic with the new cable. Maybe you can get the
same results from Standard Horizon.

We went with an West Marine (ICOM) DSC VHF with a WHAM (Wireless Remote
Mic) for the helm along with a Standard Horizon HX870.  The fixed VHF
does not have internal GPS but I hooked up our old Garmin 276C GPS to
feed position to it.  Nice to have backups.  The Garmin powers up and
shuts down with the radio.  I considered upgrading to a SH with AIS but
decided the old set up still works fine.  Originally had the radio and
WHAM on our old Redwing 35 and moved it over to the Mark III.

Re: Stus-List VHF Radio with Outside Extension Mic

2020-07-06 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
The VHF radio is the one thing I tend to upgrade frequently. I think I'm
on my 3rd or 4th fixed VHF since 1999. In my opinion, it's the single most
important piece of safety equipment on the boat.

I upgraded when Standard Horizon came out with RAM's. I upgraded when they
added AIS. I didn't mind re-running the RAM cable for each upgrade. Like
others, I like a RAM with the capability of shooting 25 watts into the
sky. I also have a Standard Horizon HX870 handheld.

I think Touche' has a Standard Horizon Matrix GX2000 right now. So far
I've resisted the urge to upgrade to the GX2400 because Touche' is still a
NMEA 0183 boat.

I do see an advantage to a VHF that has GPS built in. If your primary GPS
dies, you can still send a DSC distress call with location.

Used VHF's sell readily on eBay. I've sold several. Years ago, one of my
clients wanted to upgrade to a VHF with a RAM. I did so, giving him a
credit for his old VHF. I sold the old, still very nice, VHF to another
client, got paid for the install. I sold the VHF from the second client on
eBay. I made money 3 times and each client got upgraded. Win, win, win,
win!

As for brand preference, I tend to favor Standard Horizon but really don't
have any significant reason for that. I think ICOM is also a very reliable
brand. I had an ICOM handheld for years and it worked fine. It, too, got
sold on eBay.
