I have experience changing the old C&C aluminum frames on an earlier 34 (1978)
– the same frames that were used on the mid-70s C&C 33 – with Lewmar opening
ports. As you indicated, non-opening ports can be used on a slightly curved
surface without issue, which is how the windows on the 34 were originally
installed. However, the Lewmar installation instructions were quite clear that
opening ports must be mounted on a flat surface. To address this, I had my
opening ports professionally installed. With the old windows removed, the
interior liner was epoxied (West System) to the interior wall, thereby
increasing the total wall thickness (and eliminating a gap for water to seep
into unnoticed). After the cut-out was opened slightly for the Lewmar frame,
the installer “flattened” the mounting surface by routing (very slightly) into
the outside cabin wall at certain locations where the frame attached. When he
was finished, you would have to look really closely to see that the frame was
slightly embedded into the gel coat in these locations. The windows looked and
worked great, and the opening ports made a huge difference down below on hot
days.

It was an expensive and time-consuming installation, but I was very happy with
the end result. I don’t know if the windows would have worked properly or
leaked had they just been attached to the curved surface.

Subject: Stus-List Replace Beckson by Lewmar Standard

Hello all,

Does someone has experience in replacing Beckson portlight with Lewmar standard?

Searching the list archive, I found a reference of an install on a C&C38 1976.

According to the install instructions, the surface has to be flat within 1mm
maximum. My cabin side has a curve of 6mm on the Size 2 portlight lenght. I'm
sure the frame will follow the curve, but will the lens close thight with this
frame deformation?

Regards,

Pierre Tremblay
