Colorado Birds
I happened upon this dove yesterday and wanted to share it with others. I
have a couple ideas what it is but wanted to see what other more
experienced birders thought it might be. Is it a Leucistic Eurasian
Collared-Dove or is this a Ringed-Turtle-Dove? If so is it an escapee or
will it be
These pale forms of the Eurasian Collared-Dove (EUCD) occur in low numbers
throughout their range in North America -- a nice little reminder of their
semi-domesticated origins.
But how can we know for sure whether this is a EUCD (*Streptopelia decaoto*)
or a Ringed Turtle Dove (*S. risoria*; aka
Bill Maynard and I decided to meet up at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in
eastern El Paso/eastern Pueblo Counties, (http://www.chicobasinranch.com/) at
8am this morning, and birded until 1pm. We found 50 bird species.
El Paso County side of the Ranch (around the banding station mostly):
We found another first-of-year bird at Lake Estes, in Estes Park, Larimer Co.,
on a walk at the lake this morning -- a Killdeer. None have been reported to
eBird for the Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park area so far in 2014.
