In reading Ted's excellent post about the festival (which I have never
attended; I have to get down there one of these years), I was as struck by the
weather references as the birds/butterflies/critters. It reminded me of an
experience I had down there last early spring. I had a small group out
Another outing to Park County om 2/24, repeating my pattern of many stops
on many areas.
Roads in the Pine Junction / CR 43 / Bailey region continued to be lively
where there was a good Ponderosa pine crop or bird feeders. Good
numbers of *Cassin's
Finches*, *Red Crossbills* (Type 2), along with
Birded Teller Lake 5, Walden Ponds and Boulder Creek at 75th St this
morning. At Teller Lake and Walden, water was barely 5-10% open. At
Cottonwood and Teller 5, ducks were clustered in the limited open water.
There was a single male Hooded Merganser at Cottonwood. Couldn't find the
female but may
Three Short-eared Owls were first seen on Sunday (2/22) along Buckeye Road
(Larimer CR82) near the Rawhide Power Plant. These owls were first seen about
4:30pm perched on roadside poles about 3.9 miles west of I-25 (Exit 288).
After 5pm they began to hunt south of the road in tall, tan grass
This evening five of us were driving into Powderhorn Ski Area in Mesa
County and observed a large flock (around 150) of Rosy-Finches feeding
along the side of the road. The flock consisted mostly of Gray-crowned,
but we estimated there were at least 15 Black, 15 Brown-capped, and at
least 10
