Today I observed an adult Red-headed Woodpecker at the Zapata Ranch near
Mosca, Colorado (Alamosa County). This is the first time I have ever seen
one here in the 34 years of birding the San Luis Valley. According to the
local records I keep, this is the 5th record for the San Luis Valley. It
Quiet day; lots of sunshine, few birds. Total for the day was 17 new, one
return:
Western Wood-pewee 1
Warbling Vireo 1, banded in 2014
House Wren 1
Swainson's Thrush 2
Gray Catbird 5
Yellow Warbler 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
White-crowned Sparrow,

I walked the Arkansas River Trail, from below Pueblo City Park east to the
footbridge (west of Dutch Clark Stadium). The best birds were located
between Reservoir Drive (where there is a parking lot), and the
footbridge. These best birds today were: singing Carolina Wren, singing
This morning, before heading over to deKoevend to take another look at the
White-eyed Vireo, I stopped for a short walk at Marjorie Perry Nature
Preserve. During the trip, a Green Heron flew over the east edge of the
preserve, headed east.
As others have mentioned, the White-eyed Vireo
The bird was singing vigorously at 7:30 AM at the precise location
described so well be Jared del Rosso (thank you for the precise directions
and the map!). Why was I not surprised to see Glenn Walbek there? Beautiful
