This post is more of a promotion of a decent south central (Denver) Metro
area birding spot than about any specific bird. but did have a load (10
species) of sparrows there this afternoon (Weds., 4 May '22). The area in
question is around the confluence of Bear Creek and the South Platte River
I miss Joe’s humor and ability to tell a tale. We need to bring more humor and
joy of birding back to Cobirds!

Birders,
I found and photographed a Wood Thrush at Van's Grove (Bent County, CO) this
morning. I was able to relocate it for two parties later in the day. While we
were trying to re-find it, we saw a female American Redstart and two
Black-and-White Warblers (together!). Also present was a
Gigi, that's a great find!

Bryan Guarente predicted a good migration today, and we sure saw a lot of
birds.
Several flocks of 2-3 dozen sparrows: Vesper, Chipping, Clay-colored, Lark,
White-crowned. One Lark Bunting - surprisingly a female.Green-tailed Towhee,
Bullock's Oriole, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeaks at
Hi All - got a friendly heads up that I should have included the following

Joe Roller suspected that honoring Mom on Mother’s Day could be done better
than old-fashioned methods such as personally doing her cooking,
decorating, or gardening. Joe’s advice on Cobirds for Mother’s Day 2009
remain timely and special today. And Joe would find a way to revere both

Hey COBirders,
Another busy day at Clear Spring Ranch banding - 84 birds netted (although 15
were Redwinged Blackbird females, and 9 were Brown-headed Cowbirds - which I
choose not to band, and save my fingers getting chopped up - Icterids have
sharp claws that rip skin and nets.)

With the return of the wet, cool weather I decided to head back to Crow Valley.
Lots of bird activity this morning starting with a large mixed flock of
sparrows at the entrance. There were also a substantial number of House Wrens,
Orange-crowned Warblers, and Spotted Towhees. I counted 14 SPTO
Looks like a Phalarope to me, maybe Red-necked.

Actually Mike, I would say these are some "great" flight shots in
particular of Wilson's Phalarope. They have been pouring into our area
for the last 3-4 days.

Just an update that our immature Summer Tanager is still at Prospect Park.
Was spotted in the same general area on the creek side across Tabor Lake.
Was observed by a group of birders on a DA field trip as well as a group
from Boulder Birding.
We also saw a lovely Virginia's Warbler and Lark
I went to Garden of the Gods on Sunday in hopes of finding a good migration
fallout. As that turned out to be a bust, I headed east to Edison Road.
Nothing exotic, but a small first wave of spring migrants was around: lots
of Lark Buntings; a few Swainson's Hawks and Western Kingbirds, and a
My dad (Jerry DeBoer) just turned up a/the Brown Pelican at Brush Hollow
Reservoir just west of Pueblo.

Hello Fellow Birders,
Yesterday it was a Western Tanager gracing my little townhouse yard near
Holly & Arapahoe in west Centennial. Today a Lesser Goldfinch is here, and the
over-wintering group of 4 Pine Siskins has multiplied to 10-plus. Oh, and the
tanager is still here.

Don't know if you recall, but I posted about a COMMON POORWILL we had in the
alley behind our house in southwest Denver (Athmar Park neighborhood, Denver
Co.) year before last (11 May '20). At the time this struck me as a very
fun, but relatively isolated occurrence. Well, last night (Tues., 3
New arrivals seem to be coming to Union Reservoir, east of Longmont in Weld
County, this AM. There were 6 Red-Necked Phalaropes among the previously
reported Wilson's Phalaropes, L. and G. Yellowlegs, Willets, Dowitchers,
Avocets, and Kildeer. There is an impressive number (maybe 50)
