On the 15th I biked the Picketwire Canyon trail south of La Junta. Birds
were mostly as expected with Black-throated Sparrows where the Wither's
Canyon trail joins the main trail and fair numbers of Brewer's Sparrows and
loads of Lark Sparrows along the ride. I also had Rufous-crowned Sparrow at
several spots. Yellow Warbler was the only warbler noted. Flycatcher
variety was good with Say's and Eastern Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher,
Cassin's and Western Kingbirds. 25 Species total for 5.5 hours in the
canyon. The road to the canyon from Highway 109 (is that right; runs south
from La Junta) was filled with large flocks of Lark Buntings. They don't
show up so much on the main roads through the state.

A trip to Two Buttes and the walk behind Lamar Community College had little
in the way of migrants. The best brief stop of the day on the 16th was the
Holly Rest Area on US 50 at the border with all three Orioles, all three
expected mimic thrushes (catbird pair, multiple Brown Thrashers, and
Northern Mockingbird) and a pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks that proved to be
nest building. Kind of a neat end to the time in Colorado.

I stopped at Cheraw Lake on the 14th. Quite a low water level from what I
was used to on past trips years ago. I had two light colored small terns
that could have been least but were so far off they were hard to sort out.

Great Mexican food in Rocky Ford to top off the trip.
