the No. Shovelers!

on her? nest. The Black Phoebe continued to flycatch from low bushes and rocks
in the creek until it was east of the bridge.
At this time neither bird is visible.
A few minutes ago the two nesting redtails were courting very high, nearly in a
cloud, in a thermal.
A friend, Terry Cookro, who lives in NW Denver near I-70 and Federal saw a
bright male oriole in her back yard this morning! He was perched on last
year's stalk of a Red Hot Poker plant.
We were hoping he would return so Terry could take a photo. Certainly this is
an early record!
While looking for the previously reported Brant south of Monte Vista along
highway 15 at the last pull off on the right, a friend and I saw a fos Barn
Swallow!
We did not see the Brant Thursday or Friday anywhere in the Monte Vista
Wildlife Refuge.

A Sharpy swooped over my yard apparently trying to nab one of my small, albino
ferrets!! The hawk was giving a fast kik-kik-kik call, which was higher
pitched than that of the Cooper's. I was there standing guard!

A slightly early Say's Phoebe was sitting in the cattails at the northwest
end of Hodgson-Harris Reservoir late this morning and was still there when
I left about 10 minutes ago.
For those of you who don't know where this reservoir is (probably most), it
is just east of the Saddlebrook condominium
My resident immature Cooper's Hawk has cut my dove population down to a
pair of Collared Doves and one Mourning Dove! It preferentially goes for
the doves rather than the numerous finches, sparrows, or juncos.

On Thursday the 26th while doing my USGS Breeding Bird Survey on the Boreas
Pass Rd., I heard and saw a WW Crossbill. The location was three miles down
from the top of the pass heading towards highway 285.

I have put mealworms out in my driveway and my neighbors/ driveways,
because they wondered what all the bird activity is. We have dozens, if
not over a hundred sparrows, devouring them.

The warbler song, while buzzy, is a lot more musical.

All I can say, and this is subjective, is that the series of four to five burry
notes repeated several times did not sound like a starling imitating a
flycatcher.
I queried the identification because I didn't see the bird.
I posted it because I want other birders to be alert to the possibilit
I meant Brown-crested(?) Flycatcher rather than Brown-capped(?).
After listening to the calls of other species in the Myiarchus genus, I am
as certain as I can be without seeing the bird that it was an Ash-throated
Flycatcher.

I think that both the Pine and Bay-breasted Warblers were present at that
time. I also remember one photographer's picture from that week showing
the yellow chin and yellow face. In most photos, the bird looked
boardwalk.
The lake had many of the usual dabblers (i.e., Am. Wigeon, Gadwall, No.
Shoveler, Mallard) and a few Ring-necked Ducks.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4:50 pm, Terry Cookro and I saw a Common Nighthawk
as it flew across highway 50 in front of the car. We were about 10 miles
east of Gunnison.
This seems like a late sighting, perhaps due to the warm weather and lack
of a major cold front in September.

A small group of us walked the trail along Boulder Creek just north of
Walden Ponds and west of
75th St. at the end of the DFO trip this morning. We were delighted to see
a Ruby-crowned Kinglet flitting
in the bushes. We also saw and heard a pair of C. Dippers in the same area.

About 9 am today I saw and heard a Warbling Vireo in a cottonwood near
Bass Pond. His warbling song was slower than that of the western Warbling
Vireo and ended on a high note. This is what I remember from Nathan
Pieplow's talk at DFO last month.

On a bike ride through Louisville this morning, I had a FOS singing
Bullock's Oriole in Warembourg Open Space north of Cherry St. Also present
was a Vesper Sparrow, Say's Phoebe, and a flock of Chipping Sparrows.
Notable was a complete lack of warblers along a riparian area (Coal Creek
For the last several days, I have had a White-crowned Sparrow singing
softly almost all day long from within my spruce trees in front. I have a
small yard, but they come by every year in migration. This year, the bird
sounds quite tentative, as if practicing its song for the first time.

was actively feeding in a scraggly tree by one of the exercise stations
("Jump Up" station) along the Waneka Lake trail. At this time, he not
singing very much (~one song every two minutes).

A young male Rufous Hummingbird was (Sunday, 7:40-7:50 pm) sitting in my
Washington Hawthorne tree preening after flying back and forth through my
sprinkler!! He is the first Rufous I have seen here this summer. Another
hummer also flew through the water spray, but I did not get an id.

I listened to the Cornell recordings of the Eastern Winter Wren and
recordings of the Pacific Wren from the northern Cascades. The bird in my
yard, which I heard a little over an hour ago, I think was a Pacific Winter
Wren. The song was faster and softer the that of the Easter Winter Wren.

Hi all,
I have heard 3 male hummers go by while watering my yard this morning! This
is only the second day I have heard one this month and the first day for
multiple hummers!
I put out fresh sugar water and am hoping for a Rufous.

Hi all,
I heard my first Louisville hummer of the year fly by my bedroom window this
afternoon! It was just chirping, so I assume it was a female hummer.
My feeders are up and my Agastache is covered with red blooms!
