In addition to all the shorebirds and waterbirds in Florence today I also
spotted a Broad-winged Hawk perched in a tree several hundred feet off the
road. Unfortunately due to the distance and the tree limbs that obscured
the view I couldn't get a reasonable photo.

I have had a difficult time finding much info on the dark morph
Broad-tailed Hawk I posted about yesterday other than statements in field
guides and online that dark morphs are rare. Did find this in Birds of
North America online: "Rare dark morph breeds in far western portion of
the range and is seen in migration in e. Great Plains and occasionally in
w. North America." So I guess they breed in Canada which has the most
western sections of their range. If anyone has more info on these rare
dark morphs I would be interested.

This has been a good year for Broad-winged Hawks migrating through the
Canon City area.
