Hello
CoBirders,

Mike
Henwood and I birded at Barr Lake and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal today
(November 4). At Barr Lake we saw five Common Loons (on the northeast corner,
seen from the boat launch area). There were still good numbers of Western
Grebes (80+), Franklin’s Gull (about 100) and 7 American White Pelicans. Also
seen were 5 female Canvasbacks, several Red-breasted Mergansers, and a
Bonaparte’s Gull. At the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, the highlight was 2 Swamp
Sparrows
(a species not on the refuge checklist as of September 2009). One was at the
northeast corner of Lake Mary, and the other along the 6th Avenue
Trail at the far southeast end of Lake Ladora. Also seen were many Buffleheads,
several Hooded Mergansers, a Harlan’s Hawk (dark type adult) and a Ruby-crowned
Kinglet. Belatedly, I saw at least 110 American White Pelicans at Cherry Creek
Reservoir on November 3, along with 4 Cackling Geese and 2 dark morph adult
Red-tailed Hawks.
