Hi Everyone--

I did some birding around Las Animas and Lamar this morning 3/8. A Barn Owl
heard at the Best Western hotel at the east end of Las Animas late 3/7 was
heading west. The previously-reported Eastern Towhee female at the corner of
Roads JJ and 16 showed well at dawn in the woods on the south side of the
road. A Northern Shrike was along JJ around Road 17. I attempted to follow
recent directions to the LeConte's Sparrow, but I didn't see it
(White-crowned, Song, Lincoln's, and Tree were around, and one unknown
sparrow crash-landed in the grass and disappeared). On my way east to Lamar,
a raven landed on US 50 near Road 34 (still Bent County, about a mile west
of the Prowers county line) that had the jizz of a Chihuahuan: tail a little
shorter and less obviously wedge-shaped than I would expect on a Common. It
didn't stay for closer examination. No other black corvids were anywhere
near here. At Lamar Community College, a Brown Thrasher was thrashing in the
leaves about 100 yards north of the bird log, and a Virginia Rail was
calling from the cattails. Neenache Reservoir had a large flock of geese
smack in the middle of it, a good mile from the end of the access road. They
did fly around some, however, so I was able to make out a few Ross's and
White-fronts among the Snows.
