Some JeffCo birds from September 1… An Audubon’s Yellow-rumped Warbler at Rattlesnake Gulch in Deer Creek Canyon County Park was my 1st in the “lowlands” (i.e., down from the forest breeding elevations that I had in my home area this season.
A Red-eyed Vireo along Deer Creek near the Lyons Formation hogback (east of Valley Road) was a migrant, as they do not nest there. It even sang some. A Yellow-breasted Chat was still there, singing some, too. Further downstream along Deer Creek at Hildebrand Ranch County Park I found a Swainson’s Thrush, Tennessee Warbler, and American Redstart, although birding along most of the riparian corridor was very quiet. Just a couple spots had nearly all the action. In Ken Caryl Valley the Dutch Creek Trail at the Dakota Formation hogback had a Gray Flycatcher and a migrant Eastern Kingbird, and my 1st Loggerhead Shrike of the season for the area. The nearby Lark Bunting Loop Trail had a Willow Flycatcher, a Clay-colored Sparrow and a Sage Thrasher. (And I finally had an intimate encounter with one of the famed prairie rattlesnakes). After dark a Barn Owl was calling as it flew over my Ken Caryl neighborhood for an extended period. I heard it call about 15 times over a period of about 25 minutes, then again 30 min after. I was surprised to learn that this species seems to be fairly sparse along the edge of the Front Range in the JeffCo region. There seems to be lots of good looking habitat. If the apparent paucity indicated by eBird is not correct, maybe someone in the know can better inform me, as I’d be interested to learn the true status.
