Scott Severs Longmont _____________________________ Opportunity Description: NOTE: This volunteer position is available only for those within the commuting distance of Estes Park, Colorado (there is no volunteer housing or camping for this position). Colorado State University researcher is seeking assistance for bird research in Rocky Mountain National Park. The study takes place within stream-side willow habitat on the east side of the park. The purpose of the study is to determine if willow height, vegetation cover, or the presence of elk exclosure fencing affects the quantity or species of birds using the habitat. This will be the second year of a two-year study. Position description: Volunteers will perform point counts during the dawn chorus at study sites from May 1 through the first week of July. Point counts will take place from approximately 5 a.m. - 10 a.m., seven days per week. Study sites may involve hiking up to 0.5 miles over uneven, swampy terrain. Volunteers should be comfortable with identifying riparian bird species and meadow bird species of Rocky Mountain National Park by sight and sound. Volunteers will receive a species list in advance. Volunteers may participate for one day or multiple days. Volunteers who attend the free training may be eligible to perform counts independently. Volunteers unable to attend the training are still encouraged to participate; however, you will be accompanied by a trained field technician. A free, voluntary training will be scheduled on or around May 1, 2013; specific date, time, and location to be determined.
