We started the day under gray skies in Alamosa hoping to find some great birds. Rain was forecast and it was a cool start but Jerry Poe, Mary Van Pelt and myself gave it a shot. At Alamosa Golf Course, the cold temps described the birding as well.....cold. At our third stop, the sun poked thru while we birded a new hotspot called the "Woodlot at the State Street Bridge". Go north from Alamosa on State Street and stop and park on the left before crossing the bridge. You park on the sw parking lot and venture onto the many trails in this woodlot. Birding was much improved with 2 Lazuli Buntings, a Black-and-white Warbler, thrush spp, and Cordilleran Flycatcher (Alamosa County). Then the clouds closed in and that was it for the morning.
In the afternoon just before a big rain, I birded the Wright-Shriver SWA, near Monte Vista (Rio Grande County). There is a wet slough sw of the parking lot and this place is gaining some recognition for the gems it produces. Today, 5 species of warblers including 2 Northern Waterthrushes. Then it poured as promised. Stay dry and bird anyway! John Rawinski Monte Vista, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
