Near dawn this morning a Burrowing Owl was amid a prairie dog colony in Ken Caryl Valley near the Manor House. It must be a southbound migrant. I looked again this evening but did not see it.
A visit to Mother Cabrini Shrine above Golden had good birding, with a Black-and-white Warbler the highlight. Also a Lewis's Woodpecker flew over going south, some Type 2 Red Crossbills in the pines, and a good variety of other species, including a Cassin's Finch. Later a Tennessee Warbler visited my Ken Caryl Valley yard, with a lutescens Orange-crowned close by for a nice comparison. It was sort of like old home week California style for me, as that form of the OCWA is the common one there, and I'd see a one or a few TEWA each fall. It is interesting to me that there are more "eastern" warblers to be found in CA than here in CO, or maybe it is just that more are found there because there are more birders. Either way, I don't take them for granted, and I enjoy each of the regulars, too!
