Three Type 5 (Lodgepole Pine) *Red Crossbills* were at Ridgeview Park off
South Prince St in Littleton this morning, feeding in the crown of a
spruce. I hadn't had any crossbills in the local area lately. Thinking to
try to find more amid the many conifers at Littleton Cemetery, just up the
street, I visited there shortly after noon but found none. However, there
were at least 27 (!) *Red-breasted Nuthatches *scattered in small groups
throughout. Also 1 *Ruby-crowned Kinglet*, 1 *Hairy Woodpecker*, 1 *Brown
Creeper*, and 2 *Mountain Chickadees* -- all good birds for the
neighborhood.

Toward sunset and beyond there was a major flow of gulls in view passing
southward over the vicinity of St. Mary Church (and much more broadly). The
trajectory was pointed right at McClellan Reservoir, but I'm not sure where
they were actually going. They were all aimed there, however, and the
movement continued well after sunset. All told, over 75 minutes there were
about 4,650 gulls that I saw, which was probably just a slice of the
overall movement. I was able to identify about half of these, and they were
predominantly *Ring-billeds* of course (~82%) and *Herring* (17+%). But of
the larger gulls passing close by I was also able to pick out 7 *Lesser
Black-backed*, 3 *Thayer's *and 2 *Glaucous*. Most evenings have a good
movement in that area, but tonight there were many more than usual.
