On Tuesday, January 10th, a group of about 20 birders all saw the Greater Roadrunner on Dinosaur Ridge. We arrived at the top of the hill at about 11:55 AM in beautiful weather and saw the bird at at 12:25 at a distance of about 100 feet as it was moving across the hillside. Bob Shade returned to the site about 40 minutes later and saw it again for 15 minutes, capturing some remarkable photos.
RMBO will sponsor and I will lead trips to the site on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th. We will meet at 11:25 at the Stegosaurus parking lot, which is on the southeast side of the I-70 and Morrison Road intersection. This is I-70 exit # 259. The walk to the site is a gentle uphill grade on a paved road, taking under 15 minutes. You need bring only water, snacks, sensible shoes, a good attitude and camera - you know the drill. Scopes are not needed and may get in the way. There is no guarantee that we will see the roadrunner, but the weather should be good. Nearby are other birding sites like Red Rocks Trading Post, which you might want to visit before or after this trip on your own. Two of us searched today in the blowing snow without a sighting. Roadrunners go into torpor in cold weather and it was probably hunkered down in a dense juniper tree, who knows? Please send me a private note at jroll...@gmail.com if you may be coming along. In the meantime, think, "Beep, beep!" Joe Roller, Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
