Birders,

An immature Sabine's Gull was at Adobe Creek Reservoir (aka Blue Lake) this
afternoon. It was in the shrinking south part of the lake south of the Bent
County line. As water is drawn down, there is a deep canal allowing water to
pass from the large north part of the lake, through the shallow south lake,
and on, via canal, to the outlet at the dam. Drive west to the dam from
County Road 10 on Road VV to the outlet gates, and go north along the east
side of the outlet canal as far as you feel comfortable. I walked about 1/3
of a mile north from where I parked to get to the vast mudflats of the south
lake, absolutely teeming with thousands of shorebirds and water birds. This
site is unique at the current water level in that you can walk on the canal
berm into the middle of the lake. The Sabine's Gull was loosely associating
with about 20 Ring-billed Gulls on a tiny islet in the middle of the lake.
Close views are possible. This shrinking pool is certain to host good birds
until the south lake is empty.

National Public Lands day will be held on Saturday, September 27th. As part
of that national event, I'll be coordinating a habitat project at John
Martin Reservoir to restore the barren beach habitat necessary for use by
Piping Plovers at Colorado's most important nest site for that species. I
highly encourage birders to take part in this effort. The US Army Corps of
Engineers is the sponsor of this event. We will be able to provide campsites
at Lake Hasty Campground (in cooperation with John Martin State Park), and
may be able to provide water, snacks, and some Federal lands free entry
permits to a lucky few. Generally, we are in the field from between 9 a.m.
and noon. Please contact me if you are interested in helping a worthy
project.
